“Apple is considering an even more expensive iPhone Ultra next year, in addition to the Pro models”

Will Apple also release an iPhone 16 Ultra next year in addition to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max? There has been speculation about an Ultra iPhone for some time, but as a replacement for the large Pro Max. But now it seems that this model is simply added as a more expensive alternative.

Apple has released four new iPhones in recent years: two standard models and two Pro versions. The biggest differences within each line can be found in the format and screen size, but there are sometimes other differences such as a slightly better camera. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple would consider going one step further with an even more expensive iPhone, as the third line in the series. This iPhone Ultra could appear in 2024, but what else does this extra advanced and more expensive iPhone offer?

‘iPhone Ultra in 2024 as an extra expensive model’

It has been speculated for a while that Apple will also bring the Ultra naming to the iPhone. We already saw this with the Apple Watch last year, with the Apple Watch Ultra being the more advanced version of Apple's smartwatch. Apple also already has the Ultra version of the Apple Silicon chip for the Mac, which offers extra processing power for the most expensive models. Many therefore expect that the Ultra name will eventually find its way to the iPhone. It seemed logical to rename the iPhone Pro Max to the iPhone Ultra, partly because Apple would have plans to distinguish this model more from the regular iPhone Pro with, for example, the periscopic camera. But Mark Gurman thinks it's something else.

Instead of renaming this year's iPhone 15 Pro Max to the iPhone 15 Ultra, Apple would like to keep the Ultra moniker for an extra-expensive model, alongside the two Pro versions. This means that the line-up consists of three series: the standard version, the two Pro models (Pro and Pro Max) and then the extra extensive Ultra. This iPhone Ultra model would appear for the first time in 2024, so for this year we can simply count on only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, in addition to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Incidentally, Mark Gurman speculates that Apple will keep it just as well with four models in 2024, but that the second standard model will be scrapped in exchange for the extra expensive iPhone Ultra. The current iPhone 14 Plus (and previously the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini) are performing less well than hoped in terms of sales. By exchanging this standard model for a more expensive Ultra model, Apple hopes that more users will opt for a more expensive iPhone. After all, the iPhone Pro seems inferior to you, because in the case of the iPhone Ultra there are two more expensive models.

The Ultra model could not only get a faster chip, extra camera functions and perhaps an even bigger screen, but also some more forward-thinking features or changes. For example, Gurman mentions getting rid of the charging port, something Apple has been wanting to do for years. In any case, you can count on the iPhone Ultra to come with a much higher price tag. During the last quarterly figures, Tim Cook indicated that he is not afraid that the iPhone will become too expensive for people. He said people are willing to pay more for the best model.

Usually with Apple, the name Pro stands for the best of the best. You now see that not only with the iPhones, but also with the MacBooks, desktop Mac (think of the Mac Pro) and the AirPods. But with an iPhone Ultra on the horizon, that could just change. Who knows what this will mean for the future with regard to the other products. Will we also get the MacBook Ultra or the Mac Ultra in a few years?
