Samsung 980 Pro SSD: Firmware update against “read-only bug”

Following customer complaints about failed Samsung 980 Pro SSDs at computer vendor Puget Systems, a problem with firmware version 3B2QGXA7 was discovered. An update is supposed to fix the error, but there is no remedy for failed SSDs.

The company Puget Systems is based in the USA and is a supplier of custom PCs, i.e. individual tailored systems. “While they've historically been one of our most reliable parts, we've had a surprising number of reports of Samsung drives failing, particularly with the 2TB version of the 980 Pro,” the company's recent support article reads. They then contacted the SSD manufacturer Samsung, who confirmed a problem with the now older firmware version 3B2QGXA7.

Users should update firmware

Samsung recommends users to upgrade to the latest version 5B2QGXA7. The firmware update is possible via Samsung's Magician SSD tool (download at the end of the message). The user data is actually retained, but a backup is always recommended before a firmware update just in case.

According to the investigations by Puget Systems, 980 Pro with the firmware versions 4B2QGXA7 and the said 5B2QGXA7 should not be affected.

For those affected, this applies late

However, if the SSD has already failed, which is usually noticeable by the fact that the 980 Pro (test) is suddenly in read-only mode, this solution comes too late. The firmware update can prevent the problem from occurring, but cannot reverse it on a drive that has already failed.

However, since the data should still be readable, there is the option of backing it up to another data medium or cloning the entire drive with third-party software such as Acronis. You can't do this with Samsung's own data migration tool, as this requires a working system drive.

Problems are piling up

It's not the first problem with the Samsung 980 Pro. Because the firmware 3B2QGXA7, which has now been reported as faulty, was released last year to fix a problem with the SLC mode.

At the same time, there are currently indications of a problem with the Samsung 990 Pro: According to this, the counter for the remaining durability (health) drops much faster than expected. Samsung has stated in a statement that it is investigating the cause.
