Hybrid 5G: Telekom accelerates fixed-line Internet with 5G mobile communications

After a regional test and larger field test in 2021, Deutsche Telekom is now offering its hybrid 5G option regularly to all interested customers. Hybrid 5G is a combination of fixed and mobile networks and can also provide up to 300 Mbit/s in the downlink. Hybrid LTE can also benefit from this.

Hybrid fixed network and mobile tariffs are not entirely new at Deutsche Telekom, but were previously limited to the LTE network, for example to speed up a DSL connection by bundling with LTE. In autumn 2021 there was also a regional test with 5G, before a larger field test with 800 interested parties followed in the same year. Hybrid 5G is now available from Deutsche Telekom.

Hybrid 5G uses an external 5G receiver

The technical structure for Hybrid 5G has not changed with the regular market launch. For the option, customers need the Speedport Smart 4 WLAN router, which is connected to an external 5G receiver (190 × 112 × 40 mm, 550 g) for better reception, which is used for outdoor use on the window sill, the balcony or the facade was designed. A new SIM card for the hybrid option is inserted into the 5G receiver. The two devices are connected to each other via a supplied Ethernet ribbon cable (10 m), which also supplies the receiver with power via PoE, and a LAN/PoE adapter. The ribbon cable can be routed through the window frame, balcony or patio door, so no holes need to be drilled. The assembly material required for various scenarios is included with the product.

300 Mbit/s additional for peak loads

Via the 5G network, Hybrid 5G provides up to 300 Mbit/s in the downlink and up to 50 Mbit/s in the uplink in addition to the landline connection. The fixed network connection has priority, so that the boost via the mobile network is only used if, for example, a download or streaming exhausts the regularly available bandwidth and more would be possible. The additional connection can also serve to protect against failure of the connection. The hybrid 5G option is a real flat rate with no data volume restrictions. The 5G receiver is already technically prepared for an additional downlink of up to 500 Mbit/s.

5G option is free for slow DSL

For DSL customers with low bandwidth in the MagentaZuhause XS and S tariffs, who can reach a maximum of 16 Mbit/s, the hybrid 5G option is offered free of charge. In all other MagentaZuhause tariffs, the surcharge is EUR 4.95 per month. The independent MagentaZuhause hybrid tariff is available for 24 months for EUR 34.95 per month, after that for EUR 39.95 per month. The option is not available for fiber optic connections from Telekom.

Additional costs arise for the hardware, i.e. the speed port Smart 4 and the 5G receiver. The WLAN router can be rented for EUR 6.95 per month or purchased from Deutsche Telekom for EUR 189.99. For the 5G receiver, the company charges 7.95 euros per month or a one-off fee of 359.99 euros. The components are available in a bundle for a monthly fee of 12.95 euros or a one-time fee of 529.99 euros.

LTE customers should benefit from the relief

The previous hybrid LTE option will not be replaced by the new offer, but will be retained. As the network operator explains, the new option will shift data traffic from LTE to 5G, so that the customer experience will also improve for hybrid LTE users due to the relief.
