The AMD Radeon 780M based on the current GPU microarchitecture RDNA 3 forms the new graphics unit of the “Phoenix” APUs from the AMD Ryzen 7040 series and has now appeared in a benchmark for the first time. The GPU part of the Zen 4 APUs is said to be 15 to 25 percent faster than a Radeon 680M on average.

780M beats 680M by up 25 percent

At CES 2023, AMD presented, among other things, three new “Phoenix” APUs for mobile use, which combine either six or eight Zen 4 processor cores and an RDNA 3 iGPU with a maximum of 12 compute units.

While the Radeon 780M comes with 768 shader units, AMD cuts the smaller Radeon 760M down to eight compute units or 512 shader units.

The AMD Ryzen 7040 (“Phoenix”) series will represent the manufacturer's class of 35-watt APUs in the future and will also be used in particular in gaming notebooks.

The benchmark results of the AMD Radeon 780M from the 3DMark Time Spy have now appeared for the first time on the Chinese video-sharing website Bilibili. Depending on the memory configuration, the Radeon 780M can set itself apart from a Radeon 680M (test) by between 15 and 25 percent. The integrated RDNA 3 GPU comes very close to a dedicated GeForce RTX 2050 Mobile with LPDDR5X-7500.

The first notebooks with the APUs of the AMD Ryzen 7040 series are scheduled to hit the market in March, a little later than the variants of the AMD Ryzen series 7045 (“Dragon Range”), which will also be used in particular in high-end gaming notebooks with a dedicated GPU.
