Five police officers are charged with murder in the United States

Foreign. Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with murder and other crimes in connection with the death of Tire Nichols, a black driver, in Memphis, Tennessee. That's what The Guardian writes in its US edition.

The man died three days after a traffic stop on January 7 escalated into a deadly physical attack, according to local media.

The incident initially led to protests from the usual quarters but they quieted down when the it became clear that it was officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith (pictured) who were in custody on suspicion of aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

All five are charged with murder of ordinary degree, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, misconduct and abuse of office.

Tyre Nichols was 29 years old and was assaulted during a three-minute attack, according to prosecutors.

The family's attorney says a independent autopsy showed he “died of extensive bleeding caused by severe beating”.
