Pat Buchanan, an early proponent of a more nationalist conservatism, has chosen to end his syndicated column ahead of the presidential election.

Buchanan has been an important voice in the conservative movement for decades and has also been an adviser to presidents such as Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

He has also run for president himself three times, on an anti-immigration platform similar to the one on which Donald Trump was elected in 2016. Whether Trump's time in Whether the White House, which was marked by a lack of action, bore any resemblance to Buchanan is more unclear.

Pat Buchanan was formerly an advocate of a more interventionist foreign policy and free trade, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, he began to advocate a more non- -interventionist line, and became a supporter of protectionism to protect American industry.

Buchanan was also early on advocating a harder line against illegal immigration and a “pause” of legal immigration to assimilate and Americanize the millions who came to the United States in recent decades. These views predated those of Trump and many of his constituents.

Although the Republican Party today looks more like what Buchanan espoused than the “right” that George W Bush represented in his day, the midterm elections showed that it this kind of conservatism has a long way to go before it can have real influence.

According to Pat Buchanan, it's a good time to stop writing and hand over to someone else. The American presidential election campaign must now show whether conservatism, in the sense he envisioned it, has any future in the United States, according to Buchanan.
