GoldenEye 007, developed by Rare – formerly Rareware – for the groundbreaking Nintendo 64 from 1997, is widely regarded as one of the milestones in video game history. So far, new editions have failed due to legal problems, now the N64 classic will be released on January 27th for Xbox and Switch Online.

GoldenEye 007 spies on Xbox and Switch

After GoldenEye 25, a remake based on Unreal Engine 4, planned for 2022 to mark the 25th anniversary of the legendary first-person shooter, was already discontinued in 2020 and consequently never appeared, owners of a Nintendo Switch or Xbox of the last two generations can now enjoy the spy classic on Nintendo Switch Online or via the Xbox Games Pass.

Finally, all outstanding legal issues that had previously prevented a remake on the Xbox 360 or for Nintendo have been settled and the release is now officially announced for January 27th.

According to Microsoft, the stealth shooter developed by Rare was “lovingly” reworked for the new game consoles and should coming to Xbox Game Pass “soon”.

Owners of the 30-game Rare Replay collection will receive GoldenEye 007 for free on Xbox Series X, Series S, and Xbox One.

Only on Switch with online multiplayer

Only for the Nintendo Switch, the title has also been expanded to include an online multiplayer mode, which is not available in the Xbox version for the time being. On Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, players will have to settle for the original local multiplayer.

Success of the original Committed

The 1997 original was a huge hit, playing at a production cost of around $4 million by selling more than eight million games on a mere 96 MBit (12 MB) module for the Nintendo 64 more than 230 million US dollars.

With a Metascore of 96 points as an average of a total of 21 tests on the rating platform Metacritic unites the game with excellent reviews and convinces in terms of gameplay and staging. The game was praised at the time, among other things, for its successful mission design.

In the meantime, things have been pretty quiet about Project 007, which was announced by IO Interactive at the end of 2020.
