Battlefield 2042: Classes return in January

No class, every player can equip almost everything: When it came out, Battlefield 2042 (test) broke with the traditions of the series. That was not well received, the rollback will follow in January. The pending 3.2 update will bring back classic classes with fixed roles.

The concept of specialists, with which Battlefield leaned more closely on Call of Duty, was “polarizing for some players” been, writes EA. Now the shooter is returning to the old concept of previous offshoots. This means that equipment and gadgets are tied to specific classes and can no longer be used by every character in the game. Rocket launchers, for example, are assigned to the Engineer class.

Readability should improve

The specialists are retained, but are also assigned to the four classes Assault, Engineer, Support or Recon. The assignment is based on the specialization. This should make battles more readable because it is clearer which character is carrying which potential equipment, explains EA.

Class icons above the players provide additional legibility. This would make it easier for vehicle crews to focus on threats, while infantrymen could focus fire on the support class that can revive. At the same time, the balancing should improve. The logic: Because every class and thus every player can no longer equip a rocket launcher, the gameplay design becomes clearer.

Weapons remain free

The equipment configurations are also solved by specialists and tied to a class. From the old system, Dice inherits the ability to choose any weapon. Also, a scout can use an assault rifle or a supporter can use a sniper rifle “due to the complexity of the progression” – the unlocking system is obviously too cumbersome.

Classes instead receive bonuses to specific weapon classes appropriate to their role. The attacker gets three additional magazines for an assault rifle, while the engineer can shoot more accurately with the machine gun while lying down or crouched. The support class can pull out submachine guns faster. A soldier with Recon equipment, on the other hand, can look through the scope of a sniper rifle more quickly and is happy about a weapon that lies steady in his hand.

Rescuability questionable

Despite extremely negative reviews and rapidly dwindling player numbers, EA had announced that Battlefield 2042 wanting to hold on. In fact, player counts have stabilized but are further behind those of Battlefield 1, which is attracting 50 percent more users, and Battlefield V, which still boasts more than double the number of players.

Whether classes will turn the tide is also questionable for another reason: The reviews of the last 30 days on Steam have been more gracious and at least 60 percent positive, but there are complaints but still the lack of features from the predecessors that make playing in teams and squads easier.
