You can view your tweets and Twitter timeline using a variety of Twitter apps for iOS. In this app list, we show the best Twitter apps for iPhone and iPad. What do they offer in terms of additional features?

The best Twitter apps for iOS

If you use Twitter, you have a variety of iOS apps to choose from. For example, you can send and read tweets using the official Twitter app, but there are plenty of alternatives in the App Store that might better suit your needs.

As of January 2023, third-party Twitter apps are officially banned. There is therefore a good chance that many apps that we mention below no longer work (properly).

  • Twitter
  • Tweetbot
  • Twitterrific
  • Echofon
  • HootSuite
  • Tweetings
  • Fenix

As of August 2018, third-party Twitter apps have fewer features, due to an earlier measure. This has to do with a change that Twitter made at the time, so that third party apps no longer receive real-time updates and are only allowed to send notifications against a hefty payment. That's a pity, because the alternative apps often have/had nice extra functions.

Official Twitter app for iPhone

Twitter’s official app will be instantly recognizable to most people. The app has a fresh white appearance and (of course) supports all the most recent features of the network. For example, fill in polls from your timeline and quickly send a moving image with the GIF button. In addition, Twitter is also present on the Apple Watch, so you can view tweets or watch the hottest trends. The disadvantage of this app are the many advertisements and the fact that the standard timeline is determined by an algorithm. As a result, you don't always get to see the tweets that are important to you.

Tweetbot for iPhone

Tweetbot has been the public favorite for avid Twitter users for years. Paul Haddad of Tapbots is a prominent developer who likes to get involved in current issues. The app is paid, but in return you get an app that is constantly updated and can be used on both the iPhone and the iPad. Useful about Tweetbot is the Activity tab, in which you can see in a graph how many new followers, likes and retweets you have received. This way you immediately know how popular your tweets are.

Twitterific for iPhone

Twitterific, like Tweetbot, is a popular alternative to the Twitter app. The difference is that Twitterrific is initially free and you can only decide later if you want to use the in-app purchases. With this you can, for example, buy off advertisements or add extra functions. This app has been around longer than the official Twitter app and is a true old-timer. Twitterrific even has the word ’tweet’ invented. The app distinguishes itself with, among other things, an automatic day and night theme and a handy option to recognize faces in photos. If you post a photo in a tweet using Twitterific, the app will make sure the face is always in the preview. This also works for animals and cartoon characters and makes your tweets a lot more attractive in one fell swoop. The Apple Watch app in particular is very clear, with many bright colors so that you know at a glance what you are looking at.

Echofon for iPhone

Echofon claims to be the fastest Twitter app on the App Store. In addition, there are a number of built-in functions that can be especially interesting for avid Twitter users. For example, you could create tweets longer than 140 characters at an early stage, thanks to a built-in tool.

Hootsuite for iPhone

Hootsuite is more than a Twitter app. You can manage almost all popular social platforms with it. This way you can upload photos, videos and gifs directly on your iPhone and publish them on Instagram (also as a carousel), TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and of course Twitter. You can schedule or auto-publish posts. The app is very clear; the color white predominates in the app. In addition to a Tweet, Home and search button, you will also find a statistics page in the app that shows you the reach of your tweets. If you prefer to have as few apps as possible on your iPhone, Hootsuite is a good one to consider.

Tweetings for iPhone

If you'd rather use an alternative Twitter app but still want a lot of features, you should check out Tweetings. The feature list of this app is quite long, including lists, nearby tweets, and syncing your timeline between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The app can also be adjusted in all kinds of ways. The light and dark theme switches automatically and you can send tweets via Siri. Another special feature of this app is that there is an Apple Watch app, so you can view tweets on your wrist. Face recognition ensures that photos with a face are always properly centered.

Fenix for iPhone

Browse your timeline in chronological order without commercials. That is what the maker of Fenix for Twitter promises. You can easily block unwanted users, hashtags and keywords and you can customize the tabs on the main screen by putting your favorite lists and searches on them. On the iPad, there's a handy multi-column view. You can also sync your timeline between your Apple devices, so you don't have to read anything twice.
