From the community comes an exciting and funny reader test on the subject of GPU coolants, which compares various thermal compounds and thermal pads with “alternative” coolants such as cheese, potatoes, ketchup, hand cream and copper paste. The toothpaste already known from CPU tests is also included in the test.
The somewhat different reader test on the topic of GPU coolant
< p class="p text-width">ComputerBase reader “AssassinWarlord”, who has been an active member of the community for around 15 years, has numerous different products in his very detailed reader article “Thermal paste and pads (also with cheese, potato and ketchup,…)”. A comparison of cooling performance on a GPU.
The author describes his intention and motivation for this unusual project as follows:
- The test object was an AMD Raden R7-240 with a 30 watt TDP. Only the GPU temperature was tested and compared with 5 minutes of Furmark.
- Since I already have a lot of different thermal pads from different manufacturers lying around here, I thought to myself, you can compare and test all of them with each other , which are really good and which not so much.
- [I] also used a few thermal paste and appropriate thermal paste substitutes as a reference. 😉

In addition to thermal pastes and thermal pads such as the Arctic TP2/TP3 and products from EKWB and Alphacool, there were also potatoes , cheese slices, ketchup, toothpaste and hand cream. Some of the results of the reader test may surprise you.
But before the impressions first summarize the results in a tabular overview. Ketchup cools relatively well and the graphics processor does not have to be throttled because of throttling, even with toothpaste. However, cooling with cheese is not recommended.
In the reader article itself there is more image material and detailed observations , at this point only a “best of” of the alternative coolants follows.
