Endgame Gear XM2we: Wireless gaming mouse precedes the XM2w

Since the high-end wireless mouse XM2we is still being delayed, the manufacturer Endgame Gear, which belongs to the retailer Caseking, is pushing in an externally identical version, the XM2we, but with a slimmed-down interior, which thanks to modern components at a lower price but is no less interesting.

A long-awaited wireless adaptation

In late summer 2019, Endgame Gear surprised with an extremely successful debut: The XM1 (test) fitted almost seamlessly into the existing structure of current shooter mouse recommendations. A few months later, a second edition with a more flexible cable dispelled any remaining doubts. Calls for a wireless adaptation were heard early on, but in the genre of wireless lightweights, at the end of 2019 only Logitech's G Pro Wireless (test) and Razer's Viper Ultimate (test) were available at high cost. But Endgame Gear has so far only followed two other wired XM1 variants: The again improved and illuminated XM1 RGB (test) and at the end of 2020 the more functional XM1r with a newer sensor.

A wireless mouse was finally presented in April 2022 in the form of the XM2w. As one of the first gaming mice, the wireless mouse should be based on a PixArt PAW-3395 at a recommended retail price of 110 euros, and Endgame Gear also promised high-end technology elsewhere. After several postponements, the mouse is not only still not finished, but currently has no start date at all. However, because Endgame Game Gear really wants to bring a wireless mouse onto the market, the XM2we, which is available now for around 80 euros – the suffix stands for “wireless essential” – should remedy the situation.

The XM2we is a (hardly) slimmed down XM2w

The shape and the nature of the housing are unchanged from the planned XM2w – and ultimately also from the XM1 series: The XM2we is also a symmetrical gaming mouse designed for right-handers, which is primarily intended for fingertip and claw grip. And the surface of the optionally black or white mouse is again provided with a matt UV coating.

Instead of the high-end PAW-3395 sensor, this time Endgame Gear is using the tried-and-tested PAW-3370 and a connection via 2.4 GHz radio at up to 1,000 Hertz. Otherwise, however, the data sheet of the XM2we could also be that of a high-end mouse: Optomechanical primary button (Kailh GO Optical), high-quality switches for middle click and side button (presorted Kailh GM2.0), a TTC silver encoder (wide) for the Mouse wheel and a CompX CX52850 MCU are also part of the high end of the gaming mouse range in early 2023.

It goes without saying that the XM2we, with a weight of only 63 grams, has a 410 mAh battery – Endgame Gear speaks of “a week of gameplay” -, a USB-C socket and sliding elements made of pure PTFE. The flexibly wrapped Cable is angled up at the mouse end to reduce friction on the mouse pad. And the wireless adapter with CompX-CX52650-MCU can not only be plugged into a USB-A port on the housing, but also at the end of the cable thanks to the adapter.

This time even with associated software

One point that still needs to be addressed at this point is the associated software, because Endgame Gear has not been able to cover itself with glory in the past: the configuration program promised for the market launch of the XM1r in December 2020 is still not in final version or via the Endgame Gear software. Preliminary versions can be obtained from the manufacturer's Discord server and the XM1r – just like any mouse – can be configured under Windows with numerous third-party programs, but ultimately Endgame Gear's approach in this regard is incomprehensible. But at least: Version 1.0 of the XM2we software can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
