PFAS chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, liver disease, kidney disease, autoimmune disorders and other serious health problems.

A New York court will now hear the lawsuit challenging several specific statements on Simpy Orange's packaging, such as “only natural ingredients”, “simply natural” and “nothing to hide”.

Furthermore, the phrase “filtered water”, used in the content declaration, leads consumers to “believe that further steps have been taken to remove any chemicals or contaminants,” the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit states that tests showed the juice to have high levels of PFOA and PFOS, which are two of the most dangerous compounds. They were used for decades before they were mostly phased out in the U.S. — but still pollute the environment.

Test results showed PFOA and PFOS levels “hundreds of times” higher than what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers safe for drinking water, according to the lawsuit. .

No limits exist in the US for PFAS in orange juice or other foods.
