Amazon is increasing the price of the music streaming service Music Unlimited, as the company has now announced*, in order to “[offer] the service with the usual quality”. Individual memberships, student tariffs and family memberships are affected by the price changes.

Amazon calculates price increases

Amazon is already notifying customers by email about the upcoming price increases on February 21, 2023. Amazon cites the significant increase in costs over the past three years as the reason for the price increase. Licensing costs have risen by 10.6 percent per customer and personnel and infrastructure costs by as much as 41.4 percent per customer. The costs, which have increased by around 17 euros per customer and year since 2019, therefore lead to a price increase of 20 euros per year for family membership, from which Amazon receives exactly these 17 euros, but the remaining 3 euros are deducted as VAT.

The price increase also affects existing customers with current contracts, they will be switched to the next billing period. An annual membership that has just been extended will initially continue to run unchanged and will only become more expensive with the next renewal.

It is not yet known how and whether the prices for individual memberships will also change for Prime subscribers. They currently pay EUR 8.99 per month or EUR 89 per year for Music Unlimited.
