Memory: Crucial introduces 24GB and 48GB DDR5 modules

RAM sticks with 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB are common sizes. Micron's brand subsidiary Crucial has recently found something in between: the new DDR5 modules are also available with 24 GB or 48 GB. Transfer rates are up to 5,600 MT/s and both DIMM and SO-DIMM form factors are available.

These “crooked” sizes are not completely new, because Samsung even had DDR3 modules with 24 GB, but the storage capacities are anything but ordinary: Currently, there is not a single module with 24 GB or 48 GB in the ComputerBase price comparison GB. The new memory bars from Crucial should be added soon. Some of the other sizes in the series have been available in stores for weeks.

The 24GB and 48GB DDR5 modules are offered in the DDR5-5600 speed class with CL46, which is Crucial's fastest to date. Other manufacturers have already arrived at DDR5-8000, but are targeting overclockers and working with a higher operating voltage. With the bars from Crucial, however, the standard value for DDR5 is 1.1 volts.

Intel XMP and AMD EXPO supported

Intel Raptor Lake aka 13th generation Core comes in the form of Core i9, Core i7 and Core i5-13600K with DDR5-5600 support out of the box. The speed can still be used on other CPUs by activating the Intel XMP 3.0 or AMD EXPO profile in the BIOS.

It is conceivable that the 24 GB and 48 GB modules based on the new 24-gigabit chips from Micron, while the other models still use 16-gigabit chips. Samsung and SK Hynix had also presented at least 24 Gbit memory chips. Samsung currently only lists 16 Gbit under DDR5. At SK Hynix there is also DDR5 RAM with 24 Gbit.
