Stellantis, at CES 2023 the prototype of the solid-state battery by Factorial

Stellantis aims to have solid-state batteries available by 2026. Precisely for this reason, it has invested in Factorial Energy, a company in the energy sector. which is carrying out the development of this technology. During the Automotive Group keynote at CES 2023, “ A small but interesting update has been provided on this topic.

So, at the Las Vegas trade show it was a very special event. A prototype of a new battery made by Factorial Energy with 100 Ah cells was presented. Previously, this company – had successfully tested solid-state batteries with 40Ah cells. Unfortunately, no particular new technical indications were provided.

During the presentation, Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, confirmed the 2026 goal and added only that these new batteries can count on a density of 100%. 30% higher energy than that of current lithium-ion batteries. Technology, therefore, which will allow; to create electric cars with a greater range. The development, however, continues and the goal is to continue. that of arriving at having accumulators with a density of energy greater than 50% of that of current batteries. Carlos Tavares commented:

With Factorial, we are developing a proprietary technology that uses less cobalt. Coming by 2026, the solid-state battery can be expected to become more powerful. provide a density of up to 30% more energy than the traditional lithium-ion battery, which could allow even longer driving range. long or a lower weight. Together, we are already together. working on the next generation that will lead the way; this value to 50%.

What was communicated by Tavares at CES 2023 was; certainly interesting. We also know that the two companies – they are working on the first production lines. In particular, according to Factorial Energy, it is; It is possible to adapt the current production lines to get to build the new cells. This would allow to reduce the development costs of this technology.

Solid-state batteries, we have talked about it many times in the past, on paper will allow electric cars to make an important leap forward in terms of autonomy and recharging times. For the moment, however, we're still only talking about development and future productions.

The sensation is overwhelming. that before these new batteries are available for the mass market it will take many more years. Even if the manufacturers manage to have the first generation of these batteries available for their cars in 2-3 years, initially they will only be available for a few, probably high-end models.

To the development of solid state batteries are working several companies. In 2023 several innovations should arrive; on this job. All that remains is to wait for new information to better understand the progress of this technology.
