Domestic. The moderates went to the polls to abolish the flight tax – but still let it remain. And now the tax is being raised to the highest level ever, reports Dagens PS.

On January 1, the air tax for domestic travel in Sweden will be increased from SEK 64 to SEK 69.

It is a record-high increase that is greater than the combined annual increases implemented by the S-led governments throughout the previous term.

There are three levels of air tax: Annex 1 for travel within the Nordic countries and Sweden, Annex 2 for travel to other countries further afield and a third category for all other countries. All three categories will be raised.

The tax is linked to inflation and the regulations have not changed with the historic price increase in 2022, writes Dagens PS.

The governing parties have previously stated that they wanted to abolish the flight tax. This is what it says on M's website, for example:

“The moderates say no to the government's national aviation tax. It is a tax on travellers, which does not take into account how big the emissions the airplanes give rise to. In addition, paying we fly for its emissions in the EU's emissions trading system.”

Another tax that was promised to be abolished before the election but still kept is the plastic bag tax.
