ThinkVision P49w-30: Lenovo's wide IPS black monitor with Thunderbolt 4

With the ThinkVision P49w-30, Lenovo presents a 49-inch monitor with 5,120 × 1,440 pixels in a wide 32:9 format, IPS Black with increased contrast and Thunderbolt 4. The one presented in parallel ThinkVision P30w-30 uses the classic 16:9 format for Ultra HD and also offers Thunderbolt 4, but no IPS Black.

In addition to the two new mini LED monitors Lenovo expands the professional monitors of the ThinkVision series by two LCD screens with a simple WLED backlight, whereby the brightness only achieves a standard level and no special HDR suitability is offered.

IPS Black for doubled contrast

The ThinkVision P49w-30 uses “IPS Black” with a contrast ratio doubled to 2,000:1. The resolution of the more than 120 cm wide screen corresponds to that of two WQHD displays standing side by side.

The ThinkVision P30w-30 presented at the same time is only a good 71 cm wide and only offers 3,840 horizontal pixels, but compared to the 32:9 model it has a height advantage with its 2,160 vertical pixels. Without IPS Black, however, the contrast is only 1,000:1, which is the standard value for an IPS panel.

Lenovo states a simulated color depth of 10 bits (8 bits + FRC) for both models, but the P49w-30 has a larger color spectrum with 98% DCI-P3 compared to 95% DCI-P3 for the P30w-30. Both monitors work with 60 Hz at native resolution and deliver a response time of 4 ms with the “Extreme” overdrive setting.

Thunderbolt 4 in a double pack

As with the Mini-LED innovations, one focus is on the variety of connections. Instead of USB4, there is Thunderbolt 4 in a double pack, each as an input and output. Connected devices can be supplied with up to 100 watts. In combination with additional USB ports, Ethernet and KVM, these workhorses also serve as docking stations. However, HDMI 2.1 and speakers are only available on the P49w-30, DisplayPort 1.4 is also available on both.

Prices, specifications and availability

With advantages in terms of size and equipment, the ThinkVision P49w-30 is significantly more expensive and, at 2,299 euros, costs even more than the mini LED models. The ThinkVision P30w-30, on the other hand, costs “only” 899 euros. The large monitor will only be available in August 2023 and the smaller monitor in April 2023.
