Windows 10: Security update KB5021233 may cause blue screens

As Microsoft announced via the list of open bugs, the latest security update KB5021233 for the month of December on Windows 10 can lead to a blue screen. The use of the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and the console is then recommended on the affected systems.

Blue screen and error 0xc000021a

Users who are traveling with Windows 10 and have installed the latest security update (“KB5021233”) for the month of December under Windows 10 22H2 (“22H2”) may be confronted with a blue screen and the error 0xc000021a. However, Microsoft is already working on a bug fix.

Workaround with WinPE

Until a corresponding update is available, affected users have to take care of themselves and use the Windows recovery environment intended for such purposes, Windows PE installed on a separate partition, and the console.

Then proceed as follows:

  • Start Windows 10 with advanced startup options.
  • Run Windows recovery environment.
  • Start Windows Command Prompt as admin.
  • Enter the following command*:

xcopy C:windowssystem32drivershidparse.sys C:windows system32hidparse.sys

  • Finish, type exit.
  • Restart the system.

*) the command must be adjusted accordingly if Windows is not installed under C:Windows.

Hid Parsing Library causes problems

The error and the associated blue screen always occurs when the Hid Parsing Library, which is the system file hidparse.sys in the folder C:windowssystem32 does not match the one in the folder C:windowssystem32drivers or has been corrupted.

Also in the past the System file hidparse.sys repeatedly caused problems and blue screens under Windows 7, Windows 8.x, Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Corresponding BSOD problems can usually be observed then , when new hardware or software has been installed. In most cases, the errors are associated with problems with the important dynamic program library win64.dll.
