Twitter: Majority of users vote for Elon Musk's resignation

It was another chaotic weekend on Twitter: the service briefly banned promotions from other social networks such as Mastodon or Instagram, then Musk put his future as CEO to the vote via his account. A majority now voted for his resignation as Twitter boss.

More than 17.5 million users took part in the poll, of which 57.5 percent voted for his resignation. Musk said he intends to stick to the result. However, the effects of the result cannot yet be estimated. However, Tesla stock was up 5 percent by the end of the survey.

However, Musk announced shortly after the takeover that he did not want to be Twitter CEO permanently. He only wants to do the job until existential crises are resolved, he said at a court hearing a few weeks ago. According to his own statements, this is still not the case, as he explained on Twitter yesterday. Twitter has been on the “fast lane to bankruptcy” since May.

In addition, for the CEO job you have to “like pain very much”. It is therefore important to find a person who can “keep Twitter alive”.

The vote was preceded last night by a ban on advertising from other social networks, but this did not last long. At the end of last week, there were already indications that Twitter accounts referring to Mastodon – both in the biography and in the name – would be blocked. The new policy was officially announced last night via the Twitter Support channel.

Specifically, it said that Twitter no longer accepts “free advertising for certain social media platforms”. Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post were specifically mentioned.

The criticism was massive. Among other things, reference was made to a Musk post from June in which he condemned closed ecosystems.

Musk initially defended the approach. However, a retreat followed insofar as the Twitter support channel deleted the relevant posts this morning. The corresponding entries have also disappeared from the guidelines. To what extent the rules still apply internally and how previously blocked accounts will be dealt with cannot yet be said. Musk also announced that he would conduct a survey for major policy changes in the future.
