Radeon RX 7900 XT(X): MSI is scheduled to present the first custom designs in early 2023

AMD's first RDNA 3 graphics cards went on sale this week. Both the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the Radeon RX 7900 XT (test) were available in the reference design and already in the form of some custom designs, although availability is still limited, especially for the more powerful top model.

Reference and custom designs are gradually coming in

In contrast to Nvidia's Founders Editions (FE), which are also sold exclusively with the new GeForce RTX 4090 (test) and the GeForce RTX 4080 (test) by a dealer designated by Nvidia – in Germany, for example, notebooks are cheaper – the reference designs of the two new AMD graphics cards are not only offered via the manufacturer's own web shop, but are also available from numerous board partners and distributed accordingly via various dealers. This is the case, for example, with Alternate*, Caseking* or Mindfactory*.

And while a look at the price comparison also shows that corresponding reference designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) are offered by Asus, PowerColor, Sapphire and XFX, for example, there is no trace of MSI graphics cards with the new RDNA 3 GPUs so far – both reference cards and custom designs. The fact that it may take a few weeks after the official market launch of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) before the market launch and even more so until the widespread availability of the custom designs has already been discussed in advance. Accordingly, many board partners held back for a long time with the ideas of their custom designs based on the RDNA 3 graphics chips; The following graphics cards have already been announced.

Selection of previously announced custom designs of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X)

  • ASRock RX 7900 XT(X) Phantom, Aqua and Taichi
  • Asus TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XT(X)
  • PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Hellhound
  • li>PowerColor Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Red Devil
  • Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Vapor-X
  • Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Pulse
  • XFX Radeon RX 7900 XT(X) Speedster Merc 310

At MSI, custom designs won't start until next year

So far, MSI has not been involved in all of this, whereas the manufacturer does have RTX 4000 graphics cards on offer. Accordingly, rumors were already circulating that MSI would fit the new generation of RDNA graphics chips or would stop working with AMD altogether – until the board partner finally clarified via Twitter for the market launch of the Radeon RX 7900 XT(X): It will be “soon “ Give RDNA 3 graphics cards from MSI. Andres Schilling from HardwareLuxx now wants to know when “soon” is. Accordingly, MSI will not adapt AMD's reference designs, but will present its own custom designs in the first quarter of 2023.

In any case, the question remains open as to why MSI takes so much time in relation to the other board partners. As a manufacturer that, like Asus, uses both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, the development of an RDNA 3 graphics card should actually be relatively quick after some new coolers have already been designed for the previously launched RTX 4000 graphics cards from Nvidia .
