Unreal Tournament 3 X: Shooter gets second life in free remake

Apparently earlier than planned, a product page in the Steam shop went live, revealing a new version of the shooter Unreal Tournament 3. According to the description, this is Unreal Tournament 3 X, which will come as a completely free title with crossplay between Epic, GOG, and Steam.

The Twitter post notorious for such finds User @Wario64 drew attention to the Steam page and provided screenshots as evidence. The link shared in the tweet now leads to nowhere, but the shop page with all the details can still be accessed under a different URL.

Accordingly, Unreal Tournament 3 X should be playable “completely free” and contain no microtransactions. The full scope of Unreal Tournament 3 with the Titan Pack expansion is still offered, including a single-player campaign and various multiplayer modes.

Various innovations

The German description also mentions innovations in characters, campaign, weapons and game modes as well as online functions. There is talk of a new Warfare mode, which will be introduced alongside the well-known Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. It also promises “seamless loading times on servers”, improved matchmaking and online co-op campaigns. Mod support for custom levels is also planned.

Crossplay with Epic, GOG and Steam

Although the game comes from Epic Games and would therefore only be expected in the Epic Games Store, there will also be versions for Steam and GOG. Thanks to crossplay support, they should all be playable with each other.

What's missing is an official announcement of Unreal Tournament 3 X and a release date. The only thing in the Steam shop is that the title is currently not available, but will be available in the future.

In line with the topic, Epic Games recently officially discontinued the online -Services and servers for legacy Unreal Tournament titles announced. With Unreal Tournament 3, however, it was already noted that the online features should return via Epic.

Epic account is mandatory

According to the Steam shop page, an account with Epic Games is required for Unreal Tournament 3 X. So that should also apply to the GOG version, since Epic manages the online services.
