Linux 6.1 LTS with Rust: Linus Torvalds has released the new system kernel

Chief developer Linus Torvalds has released the latest operating system kernel Linux 6.1 LTS with long-term support, which among other things introduces the free programming language Rust alongside C as a second language under Linux as well as new features and hardware from AMD, Intel and Nvidia supported.

Rust, AMD P-State and new hardware

After the developers with Linux 6.0 focused on extended support for the current processors AMD Ryzen 7000 (test) and Intel Core i-13000 (test) as well as the graphics cards from the first Arc generation (“Intel Alchemist”) alias alias Intel Xe HPG Linux 6.1 LTS now has the following new feature set.

The focus is on Rust, the new AMD P-State driver and once again support for current hardware.< /p>

Linux 6.1 LTS Highlights

  • New AMD P-State Drivers (“Patch V5”)
    • The driver is said to offer better energy efficiency than the generic ACPI CPUFreq driver and is intended for Zen 2, Zen 3, Zen 3+ and Zen 4.
    • Among other things, Precision Boost and performance are said to have been improved under light to medium loads.
  • Integration of the open source programming language Rust
    • The free programming language Rust will Introduced as a second language alongside C on Linux
  • Integration of the AMD Platform Management Framework (PMF)
  • AMD PMF Cool and Quiet Framework integration
  • Multi-Gen LRU (MGLRU) integration in the kernel
  • Patches for Raphael, Raptor Lake and Alchemist
  • Extended support for Intel DG2 (“Alchemist”)
  • Improved NUMA balancing for AMD Zen
  • New enhancements for RISC-V CPUs

AMD RNDA 3, PMF and Wi-Fi 7

The Precision Boost and the performance under low to medium loads should also benefit from this measure as well as the AMD Platform Management Framework and its Cool and Quiet Framework.

The Linux developers are also working on support for RDNA 3 and Radeon RX 7000 and have started preparations for Wi-Fi 7. Linus Torvalds emphasized that all of this made the final phase of the release cycle much longer.

In addition, the manufacturers and developers have started to support Intel Meteor Lake and Ponte Vecchio.

As the lead developer states in the official announcement for Linux 6.1 LTS, more than 11,000 submissions went into development during the two-week window . This time it's a medium-sized release.

Linux 6.1 LTS as last release in 2022

Linux 6.1 LTS is the last release in 2022 before the next regular offshoot, Linux 6.2, is to follow in early 2023.
