GeForce RTX 4090: Nvidia's new fastest GeForce* also in the notebook

Nvidia will also bring the GeForce RTX 4090 to the notebook. However, the fastest graphics card from the desktop only has the name in common with this solution, the memory configuration of 16 GB already reveals that it is more of a GeForce RTX 4080 from the desktop based on the AD103 graphics chip.

And even from this, only a basic specification would be adapted in the notebook, after all, the whole thing still has to fit into a TDP corset of probably up to 175 watts. It also remains to be seen whether this is the end of the road, short-term boost peaks have always led to a little more power consumption in recent years, the step of the cards in the desktop to go higher and higher could also be used here in a smaller form . This is supported by the fact that the first listings of the card are all in huge 17.3-inch devices from HP's Omen series, which offer space for cooling and fresh air.

Compared to the predecessor, Nvidia has not made any progress in terms of the memory equipment in the notebook, because an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti notebook GPU already offered 16 GB of graphics memory. So far, one can only speculate about the number of shaders in the GeForce RTX 4090 notebook GPU. The full configuration of AD103 is 80 SMs and thus 10,240 ALUs, in the desktop the RTX 4080 uses 9,728 shader units. Presumably a few less will be used in the notebook with a lower clock rate, after all, up to 2.5 GHz is only possible in the desktop with 320 watts.

Smaller GPUs round off the notebook portfolio

The listings reveal not only the existence of the large GeForce card in the notebook, but also the smaller ones. The RTX 4080 notebook GPU will therefore be able to rely on 12 GB of memory, it will probably be based on the AD104, which will start in the desktop at the beginning of January as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and thus the rebrand of the former RTX 4080 12 GB.

The GeForce RTX 4070 notebook GPU and GeForce RTX 4060 notebook GPU find their place underneath. The basis for these solutions should be the AD106 or even AD107 graphics chip, 8 GB of graphics memory speak for it. In this segment, however, the information has so far been extremely thin, not even a GeForce RTX 4070 has finally been confirmed and precisely specified for the desktop, there are only rumors. Even smaller cards therefore quickly fall into the category of crystal ball information.

Presentation expected at the first trade fair in 2023

The first impetus for CES 2023 is still expected, at least on paper. HP is installing the new Intel Raptor Lake-HX in the Omen laptop, which is based on the same die as the Raptor Lake-S in the desktop and is said to offer many cores and a high clock rate for gaming notebooks.
