Domestic. Mariehemsskolan in Umeå has this year a Lucia procession without religious elements and without gingerbread men and star boys, reports SVT Nyheter Västerbotten.

The idea is that the Lucia train should be gender neutral and without religious elements.
– We are a non-denominational school and have therefore chosen to remove the Christmas song, says choir director Jörgen Persson to SVT.< /p>
– We welcome the light in the darkness. We long for the light. We have several Muslim children here now.
The participants, about 40 children aged 7 to 10, must dress neutrally with glitter and candles.
Lucian can be either a boy or girl.
– When the days barely dawn up in the north, Lucia comes with hope for brighter times. That is the motto we follow, completely without connections to a particular religious faith, says Jörgen Persson to SVT.
