Rumors about an upcoming PC port of Returnal have been circulating for some time. Sony is now confirming it during the Game Awards 2022: The gritty action thriller is coming to PC as the company's next first-party title.

On PC, there should be a “There will be a number of specific adjustments and upgrades,” Sony promises. However, the company is not yet providing any further information, further information is to follow “early 2023”. All that is stated is that the “Tower of Sisyphus” horde mode, which was later patched to consoles, and the online co-op mode will be included.

The publication is therefore no longer to be expected in the first quarter. The PC version of the PS5 remake of The Last of Us Part 1 will be released there anyway, blocking this period for other Sony ports. Of the PlayStation pearls that have long been traded for the PC, only the Dark Souls forerunner Demon Souls is missing, the port of which was traded in the rumor mill early on, but so far there is no trace of it.

Surprise hit out of nowhere

Returnal was a hit on the PlayStation 5 that came out of nowhere. Its developer, the Finnish studio Hausmarque, which has now been bought by Sony, could look back on a long collaboration with the PlayStation producer, but hadn't yet had a blockbuster in its portfolio.

The game's setting and gameplay are unusual: The protagonist Selene crashes a spaceship over a planet where she is confronted with extraterrestrial threats. The trigger-happy aliens turn Returnal into a bullet hell shooter spiced up with roguelike elements. If Selene dies, the “cycle” with her crash starts all over again, but not exactly the same. As the cycles progress, Celene must find a way out of the infinite loop she is in, and to do so, she must confront herself as well. Metacritic indicates how much Returnal scores with the concept: The shooter receives an average of 86 out of 100 points from the press there, around 3,700 players award 7.3 out of 100 points.
