OpenIndiana is a Unix-like operating system, which has its roots in Solaris and SunOS from Oracle and, as the successor to OpenSolaris in the latest version 2022.10 (“Hipster”), which has now been released, is now also available on Linux extremely successful MATE Desktop Environment in the current version 1.26.

An operating system with deep UNIX roots

OpenIndiana is particularly aimed at those end users who would like to try out and gain initial experience with an operating system based on Solaris with UNIX and BSD origins.

The development of OpenIndiana is under the patronage of the Illumos Foundation, in which many volunteer developers as well as companies are involved.

The desktop MATE 1.26.0, which is familiar from Linux, ensures ease of use that does not require any major adjustments, while the graphical installation routine writes the operating system to the storage medium quickly and easily.

Like Dyson, NexentaStor, OpenSXCE, SmartOS, Tribblix and XStreamOS, OpenIndiana uses the Solaris fork illumos as its foundation and supports the OpenSolaris technologies ZFS, Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) as well as zones and KVM. With the current release, NFS is also added.

An interesting view of the bigger picture

OpenIndiana is open source and licensed under GPL and CDDL. The free operating system is certainly not designed for the general public, but it does provide an interesting perspective beyond the open source box. Thanks to the corresponding office applications, the browser and e-mail clients as well as multimedia apps, everyday use is definitely possible.
