OnePlus is expanding future support to four new OxygenOS generations (Android major versions) and five years for Android security patches. This means that there is one year more in each case than in the context of the previous update commitment. However, the extended support should only apply to “selected devices” from the coming year.

The last change to OnePlus' Android support was in July 2021, when the company announced the merging of the codebase of OnePlus' OxygenOS and Oppo's ColorOS. Up to this point, there were still two years of Android updates and three years of security patches as part of the “OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule”. shorter support were considered. The following overview describes the currently valid Android support from OnePlus.

The previous update commitment from OnePlus

  • Flagship products (including T and R): From OnePlus 8 series and newer three major Android versions and four years of security updates.
  • Nord and Nord CE: From the first OnePlus Nord and Nord CE and newer, two Android major versions and three years of security updates.
  • Nord N series: From the OnePlus Nord N10 and N100 and newer, one Android major version and three years of security updates.

Four generations of OxygenOS for selected devices

As the company has now announced, four generations of OxygenOS and five years of Android security patches are to be made available for “selected devices” starting next year. Since a new OxygenOS version has always been based on a new Android main version, four new Android main versions can be assumed. However, four generations is not the same as four years, depending on when the smartphone came onto the market.

OnePlus has not yet commented on the devices affected by the new regulation. The revised strategy may only take effect with newly released smartphones such as the OnePlus 11 expected for 2023.

The current OxygenOS 13 based on Android 13 has been available since August on the following OnePlus smartphones.

OnePlus and Samsung pass Google

For Google, the extended support for OnePlus is particularly embarrassing. After Samsung, there is now a second manufacturer that offers longer Android support than the developer of the operating system itself. Samsung also has a commitment for four main Android versions and five years of security patches. Google itself, on the other hand, only has three main versions with five years of security patches.
