Coming spring, a cheaper pixel smartphone should be available for the Google I/O. Initial renders and specs for the Pixel 7a suggest that the more expensive Pixel 7 will have some serious competition. The Google smartphone, for example, is to have features such as a 90 Hz display and wireless charging.

The Smartprix website shows the first renderings of the usually accurate OnLeaks, which shows the dimensions of the smartphone with 152.4 × 72.9 × 9.0 mm, so that the new generation would be marginally higher, wider and deeper than the Pixel 6a (test) linked in the specifications at the end of the article.

6.1-inch display should offer 90 Hz

The screen should again measure 6.1 inches, but this time offer a refresh rate of 90 instead of 60 Hz, so that there would be a tie with the Pixel 7. Only the Pixel 7 Pro (test) achieves a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. Compared to the more expensive Google smartphones, slightly thicker screen edges are expected, and a slightly different housing can be assumed, but it should use the same basic design.

Pixel 7a in the current Google design

As can be seen from the renderings, the Pixel 7a should also get the camera bar typical of Google, which, according to the pictures, does not seamlessly merge into the side frame of the cheaper model. This is a feature that Google has changed on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro compared to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro (test) to increase the quality impression. Whether the Pixel 7a will also use aluminum or plastic with the appearance of aluminum for the frame and the area around the rear cameras is not clear from the renderings. However, the finish is expected to be matt like the Pixel 7, while the Pixel 7 Pro is polished to a high gloss by Google. The Pixel 7a is said to come in white and dark gray colors.

Dual camera with Sony sensors

A dual camera with sensors from Sony is said to be hidden in the camera bar. According to previous rumors, the IMX787 with 64 MP and the IMX712 with 13 MP should be used. The Pixel 7, on the other hand, uses the Samsung GN1 with 50 MP and the Sony IMX381 with 12 MP, the Pixel 7 Pro also uses the Samsung GM1 with 48 MP.

Tensor G2 and wireless charging

After the Pixel 6a was launched with the Tensor G1, the Pixel 7a is expected to use the Tensor G2. On the equipment side, wireless charging is also being speculated for the first time, which was previously reserved for the more expensive smartphones from Google. However, charging is said to be limited to 5W, while wireless charging is supported up to 20W on the Pixel 7 and up to 23W on the Pixel 7 Pro when using the second-gen Pixel Stand. For regular Qi chargers, Google specifies a maximum of 12W.
