Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 in review: large 15-inch flap, too little behind it

Thanks to the practical screen in 3:2 format and the very good input devices, the Surface Laptop 5 is a successful office notebook. However, Microsoft does not make friends with the spartan variety of connections and the wasted space on and in the case. Although the manufacturer saves, customers pay high prices.

AMD out, Evo in: Microsoft's Surface Laptop 5 can now also be adorned with Intel's seal of approval for high-quality notebooks that are equipped with the appropriate processors, high-quality screens and the company's connectivity. New Ryzen CPUs are no longer used, instead Microsoft relies exclusively on Intel's twelfth core generation aka Alder Lake-U.

Surface Laptop 5 starts at €1,179

Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 5 on October 12 alongside the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Studio 2+. The notebook is again offered in 13.5 and 15 inches as well as in versions for private and corporate customers. The table below lists the model for private customers, which starts at 1,179 euros with 13.5 inches and from 1,529 euros with 15 inches. The smaller model comes with a Core i5 or i7, while the larger notebook always has a Core i7. In the business environment, Microsoft also offers the Surface Laptop 5 with the slightly faster Core i7-1265U and Windows 11 Pro.

For the test, the editors had the 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 with Core i7-1255U, 16 GB LDDR5X-4266 and 512 GB SSD in the color platinum with a metal palm rest at the recommended price of 2,079 euros.

Same chassis with new Thunderbolt connector

Everything new on the inside, everything the same on the outside? In principle yes, but then somehow not. Because although Microsoft has taken over the chassis from the last generation in terms of its basic structure, the change to Intel Evo is also noticeable externally in one place. Behind the USB-C port on the left is not only the USB-C protocol version 3.1 with 10 Gbit/s including DisplayPort 1.4 in alternate mode, but also Thunderbolt 4 with a maximum of 40 Gbit/s for the first time.

Sobering variety of connections

This port is flanked again by USB-A, which now has 10 instead of 5 Gbit/s, and a 3.5 mm connection for headphones. Although there would obviously be enough height and depth, the number of connections is very manageable. On the right side of the notebook, users will only find the Surface Connect, which is used to charge the device. However, charging is also possible via the USB-C port. Microsoft has literally left out important interfaces for creative users, such as card readers, HDMI or more Thunderbolt, because with the current selection the manufacturer cleverly avoids a redesign of the case.

image 1 of 3

Thunderbolt as newcomer links
On the right there is only the Surface Connect

The tested 15-inch model is on par with the smaller 13.5-inch variant with this variety of connections, if you can call it that. It's still the same after opening it, because a larger touchpad or an extended keyboard didn't make it into the notebook. But there is one difference: the large Surface Laptop 5 always comes with an aluminum wrist rest and is available in platinum and matt black. The platinum color for the 13.5-inch model comes with an Alcantara wrist rest that surrounds the touchpad and keyboard.

Excellent workmanship with SSD replacement

Microsoft gambles away praise for the sparse ports, but collects plus points for the excellent workmanship. Nothing creaks or rattles here. The entire chassis looks as if it has been milled from one block, but it is not closed to the user, even though the hurdles are higher than those of other manufacturers. The SSD is the only component that can be changed by the user, but first the feet have to be removed, the screws loosened from below and then the top cover and keyboard removed again from above. If you shy away from such work, you should choose between 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB in advance – for the RAM you have to make a decision in advance anyway “>Input devices are a big plus

Although the input devices have not changed compared to the Surface Laptop 4, the touchpad and keyboard once again perform very well. The touchpad measures 11.5 × 7.7 cm and convinces with very good gliding properties, which allow the cursor to move quickly and precisely through Windows. However, the solution from Microsoft is not as gigantic or cleverly integrated as Apple's, where you can click anywhere on the touchpad.

Die Keyboard offers three levels of brightness
Classic function keys instead of Touch Bar

There have never been gimmicks like a touch bar with the Surface products, so the Surface Laptop 5 also comes with a full row of function keys in a classic style. The manufacturer pulls the power button one position inwards so that the delete key can be placed in the usual position at the top right and hit accurately. The same applies to the entire layout, which, for example, does not swap “Ctrl” and “Fn” in contrast to Lenovo. The function keys are assigned their secondary function ex works, for example for volume or screen brightness. However, this default setting can be changed if necessary. The keyboard itself offers a rather soft stroke and thus enables relatively quiet typing. Longer articles presented no hurdles and did not lead to fatigue. The keyboard illumination can be set to three levels of brightness and is even across all keys.

Touch screen in practical 3:2 format

The notebook also accepts inputs via the screen, because similar to the Surface Pro, Microsoft installs a panel with 10-point multi-touch. The pane of glass in front of the panel is therefore not just decoration, but actually necessary. For protection, Microsoft relies on Gorilla Glass 5 from the supplier Corning. The glass cover ensures a high level of color brilliance, but is accompanied by the well-known disadvantages such as stronger reflections, a higher level of brightness required for working and greasy streaks after use.

Crisp screen at 201 ppi
Fast Windows Hello camera in thick border
2,496 × 1,664 pixels at 60 Hz on 15 inches

Although the 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 is in the price range above 1,500 euros and the test device even costs more than 2,000 euros, Microsoft remains extremely conservative when it comes to the screen. However, the company once again has to be credited for the 3:2 format used, which has a particularly large area in height and thus offers a considerable advantage in the office environment. The panel has 2,496 × 1,664 pixels and thus achieves a high pixel density of a sharp 201 ppi. For comparison: The big MacBook Pro 16" is 3,456 × 2,234 pixels at an even higher 254 ppi.

Dolby Vision IQ as the only innovation

Microsoft is not taking inspiration from the current MacBook Pro (test) or the new Surface Pro in other areas either. The screen remains at classic 60 Hz and regular LED backlighting. 120 Hz, a mini LED backlight or even an OLED panel? none. The new screen is the only innovation with Dolby Vision IQ, so it can analyze the ambient light in HDR mode and adjust the white point of the content accordingly.

However, the display is not necessarily an HDR feast for the eyes, but this is not due to the impeccable sRGB calibration, which is nothing to complain about. If desired, users can set the screen to the “Vivid” mode, which intensifies the color saturation. Because neither a special backlight nor OLED is used and the average brightness determined from nine measuring fields is 409 cd/m², the wow effect in HDR mode simply does not come about that a current MacBook Pro with its up to 1,600 cd/m² or a high-quality PC monitor or television. Viewed soberly, the Surface Laptop 5 only offers a very well-tuned office screen, but nothing more. This is matched by the comparatively thick display edges, which other manufacturers have long since got rid of. Here, too, you can see that the Surface Laptop 5 is largely based on the Surface Laptop 4.

Alder Lake-U replaces Tiger Lake -U and AMD from

Under the hood, something more is changing and standardization is taking place. Instead of Intel Tiger Lake-U or AMD Ryzen 4000U, there is now only Intel Alder Lake-U. Specifically, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 for private customers uses only the Core i7-1255U, a 10-core processor that offers two performance cores with Hyper-Threading and eight efficiency cores without this function, for a total of twelve threads be available. According to the data sheet, the P cores reach a maximum of 4.7 GHz, while the E cores reach 3.5 GHz. The basic power consumption of the processor is 15 watts, the maximum turbo power consumption is 55 watts. How much the CPU actually allows itself in practice also depends on the energy profile selected for the Surface Laptop 5.

Three energy profiles with 25 watts as Standard

Microsoft offers three profiles for the notebook, of which the “Recommended” profile is set by default and was used for all benchmarks and battery measurements. With this preset, PL1 (permanent power consumption) and PL2 (maximum permitted power consumption) are each specified with 25 watts. In the “Better performance” profile, the PL1 remains at 25 watts, but up to 40 watts are possible for a short time. Only with the “Best performance” setting does the PL1 increase to 30 watts, while the PL2 climbs to 60 watts. After the regular benchmarks, the editors use Cinebench R23 to show the differences in terms of performance, package power and clock behavior of the individual profiles.

Profile PL1 PL2 Recommended 25W 25W Better Performance 40W Best Performance 30W 60W

Surface Laptop 5 with Core i7-1255U in benchmark

Because the processor is limited to 25 watts by default, which was confirmed via HWiNFO, the Surface Laptop 5 in the factory settings is one of the rather slow devices among the notebooks and CPUs recently tested in the new benchmark course, which, however, in view of the only two P -Cores comes as no surprise. The Surface Laptop 5 is classified as an office notebook and not a powerhouse that was designed for video editing and similar applications. Thanks to hardware acceleration on the Intel GPU, videos are encoded very quickly for H.264 and H.265. However, the subject showed problems with the y-cruncher in the test, which is why this benchmark was not included in the performance rating.

Comparison of energy profiles

Separated from the benchmarks listed above, Cinebench R23 shows how the performance changes in the different profiles. According to this, the single-core performance in particular can be increased massively by 43 percent with the one level higher profile. With “Best performance” there is only an additional 2 percent or 46 percent compared to the initial value. However, there is not significantly more multi-core performance in the higher profiles, because the jumps of 4 and 11 percent to the factory setting are hardly worth mentioning.

CPU clock and package power in comparison

The permissible consumption of the CPU package and the clock rates derived from it are decisive for the higher or lower performance. Microsoft hardly lets the processor off the leash ex works and only allows it around 7 watts and clock peaks of 3.2 GHz in Cinebench R23 under single-core load – far from the 4.7 GHz in the Intel data sheet. The diagram also shows the values of PL1 and PL2 read out by HWiNFO, which in the multi-core test are standard at 25 watts each and again 3.2 GHz at the peak, around 3.0 GHz later and 2.6 GHz multi-core clock enable after about 135 seconds of full load.

In the “Better performance” profile, 15 watts are reached at the beginning of the measurement with single-core load and the promised 40 watts in PL2 with multi-core load before the processor levels off at 25 watts PL1. This is accompanied by 4.1 GHz for single-core, individual peaks also reach 4.4 and 4.5 GHz. The multi-core clock climbs in the higher profile to 4.3 GHz in the context of the PL2 and fluctuating 3.0 and 3.1 GHz in the PL1. If you actually want to call up the 4.7 GHz specified by Intel for the single-core load, you have to switch to the fastest “Best Performance” profile, which draws almost 42 watts in PL2. The 60 watt PL2 is briefly available for the multi-core measurement, which also peaks at 4.7 GHz, but more often ends at 4.4 GHz and delivers 3.3 GHz throughout, before the clock drops to a little more than 2 minutes load falls back to 3.0 GHz.

The three energy profiles define how fast a Surface Laptop 5 ultimately works. It is pleasing that all changes only have to be made in one place in the Windows settings and there are no additional apps to be found as with third-party providers. However, even with this notebook, not every “average user” should be aware that more performance can be unlocked via the Windows settings.

SK Hynix PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD

For the SSD, which is the only component that can be replaced by the user if the case can be successfully opened, Microsoft relies on SK Hynix and the HFM512GD3GX013N, which is a 512 GB model in M.2 2230 format , which is connected via PCIe Gen3 x4. The 3.4 GB/s and 2.4 GB/s in sequential read and write determined in the test are a good average given that SSDs are now much faster.

The battery has remained small for years

The fact that Microsoft has installed the same hardware in the 13.5 and 15-inch models is also noticeable in the Surface Laptop 5 with the battery. With only 45.8 Wh, the larger variant offers a disappointingly low and, above all, exactly the same capacity as the smaller notebook in relation to the case. Since the first Surface Laptop from 2017, which achieved 45.2 Wh, practically nothing has changed in this regard, although the processors have become somewhat more economical depending on the configuration.

Microsoft makes it easy for itself again, saves costs and wastes space, because the screen alone benefits from the additional volume of the larger version. All other components including the battery are identical. For comparison: In the MacBook Pro 16" The battery is more than twice as big.

      Manufacturer's runtime information

The battery life information provided by the manufacturer is practically identical to that of the Surface Laptop 4. The 13.5-inch model has so far reached 19 hours (AMD) or 17 hours (Intel), the 15-inch model 17.5 hours (AMD) or 16.5 hours (Intel). In the new generation it is 18 hours (13″) or 17 hours (15″). The runtime applies to the smallest hardware configuration with a mixed operation of Edge browser, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and standby at a brightness of 150 cd/m².

      Battery runtimes in practice

The editors, on the other hand, measured the notebook in the office benchmark of PCMark 10 and when streaming in the Edge browser at a brightness of 200 cd/m² each. Around 9:30 hours for office use is a rather average value and therefore nothing special that Microsoft could boast of. The runtime for YouTube streaming in the browser is rather disappointing, for which only 7 hours could be determined.

      Unit: hours, minutes

The Surface Laptop 5 has also been integrated into the editor's everyday life over the past few weeks and has accompanied the reporting on the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2022, among other things. During Qualcomm's in-house exhibition, the running time was always sufficient to cover a whole day of the conference, which lasted around 7 hours with breaks, without going to the socket. However, it must also be mentioned that in this scenario the notebook was primarily used indoors with low brightness and only for writing in the browser and with light image editing in GIMP. Tasks with higher demands would have pushed the battery to its limits much more quickly.

65 watt power supply with additional USB-A socket

The magnetic Surface Connect proved to be fiddly in everyday use and wanted to connect to the notebook far less “independently” than Apple's MagSafe. At Microsoft, the housing tapers towards the bottom, which is why the socket is hit less safely. However, the Surface Connect also offers protection against tearing the device away from the table.

      Image 1 of 3

      Power adapter with flexible cable
Additional USB-A port with 5 watts

Microsoft supplies the notebook with a 65 watt power supply, which can handle all peak loads of the processor so that there is no discharging even under full load. Of the 65 watts, 60 watts go to the notebook and 5 watts are reserved for the USB-A socket on the power supply, which can be used to charge another device such as a smartphone or tablet.

      Conclusion

With the Surface Laptop 5, Microsoft delivers a good office notebook, especially in view of the extremely practical screen in 3:2 format and the very good input devices, which also features quiet operation in the standard profile, high-quality workmanship and a clean Windows 11 without Bloatware scores. Plus points are the very fast Windows Hello camera, good speakers and the SSD, which can be replaced with a little effort.

However, there is clear criticism for the almost lazy approach to the 15-inch model, for which Microsoft hasn't integrated a single improvement over the smaller version, apart from the screen. Exactly the same components are used in the huge case, the battery is not a single watt hour larger and the variety of connections is just as small. There are long open spaces on the sides of the chassis that could be used for more USB, more Thunderbolt or a card reader. When charging, the manufacturer continues to rely on the Surface Connect instead of USB-C, turning the right side of the notebook into unused wasteland.

      Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Review

Ultimately, the device's performance must also be questioned, because relying on U processors in a large 15-inch notebook also shows that the 13.5-inch model has simply been upsized, rather than alternatives such as one potent P or H processor or similar from AMD. It's much cheaper for the manufacturer to use the same circuit board for all models.

However, this does not result in low prices for the user, because at least 1,529 euros are due in the 15-inch class. The test device with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD even costs over 2,000 euros, although this equipment is nothing special these days.

The 15-inch model is therefore Recommended only in view of the larger screen, but apart from that it doesn't offer anything that the 13.5-inch model can't do. The fact that Microsoft makes it so easy for itself and still charges high prices clouds the overall impression of an otherwise good office notebook.
