Intel has released three plugins that bring Intel Xe Super Sampling (“XeSS”) to Unreal Engine versions 5.0, 4.27, and 4.26. Games based on Epic Games' Graphics engine will therefore probably increasingly offer AI-supported upsampling on Intel's Arc, AMD's Radeon and Nvidia's GeForce in the future.

Intel XeSS comes more easily into the Unreal Engine

Intel has released a total of three XeSS plugins for Epic Games' Unreal Engine, allowing game developers to integrate Xe Super Sampling into their Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 games, simulators, and visualization software.

Unreal Engine 5 and 4 are supported

The three plugins are already available for free download on the developer platform and are intended to make it easier for independent developers and smaller studios to integrate Intel XeSS.

XeSS is catching up with AMD FSR and FSR 2.0, which can also be integrated into the Unreal Engine via a plugin. While AMD's upscaling technology has been open source since June 2021, Intel XeSS is not available as source code, only in the form of precompiled binaries.

Advantages on Intel Alchemist, compatible with all GPUs

With the plugins available for both the new Unreal Engine 5.x and the still widespread Unreal Engine 4.x, the graphics engine can take advantage of Intel XeSS not only on Arc graphics processors (“Alchemist”), where it also benefits from the accelerated XMX code path, but also on AMD's and Nvidia's graphics chips, where the technology uses the slower but fully functional DP4a code path.

Technically, XeSS is a second-generation super-resolution technology that Intel says is comparable to AMD FSR 2.x and Nvidia DLSS 2.x and should be as easy to integrate as adding AMD FSR.
