Efficient systems: How do you set up your PC to save resources and money?

There is an interesting contribution from the ComputerBase forum community that would like to find out how you save resources and energy and ultimately also money when working and playing on your PC and whether you use customized system settings or special operating modes for this.

What to do to save energy, resources and money?

The ComputerBase reader “Jongleur666” started a discussion about saving resources when playing, surfing and working on the PC with the article “Energy saving vs. Gambling”, in which numerous community members have already taken part. The measures for saving energy and resources and the influence of the operating modes and settings of the operating system are discussed.

Settings and modes that can affect the system's power consumption , include:

  • Windows Game Mode
  • Windows Power Plans
  • FreeSync and G-Sync on the monitor
  • Refresh rate of the monitor
  • HDR functions of the monitor
  • Configuration of the fans

The author was able to identify major differences, especially with regard to HDR and high frame rates, which are already evident on the desktop.

I have the whole setup on an Eve Energy outlet. HDR plus 120 Hz makes a difference of about 90 watts. The normal desktop looks almost identical. The energy saving mode accounts for about 20 watts for me compared to the balanced profile.

The author himself has configured his system in such a way that he can switch between an energy-saving setup with around 145 watts and a high-performance setup with around 270 watts. The ComputerBase reader “BeBur” was also able to identify large differences in power consumption on the desktop between the energy-saving mode, a balanced system and maximum performance.

Power consumption – example “BeBur”

  • Energy saving: 60 watts
  • Balanced: 75 watts
  • Performance: 110 watts

Some users also bring a second, economical system into the discussion for light loads, such as surfing the Internet and working with an Office suite. But how do you see it? Do you also use appropriately adapted profiles and special operating modes as well as dedicated systems for light everyday tasks or do you operate your system with full power consumption?

How do you save energy, resources and money when running your PC?

  • I switch between different operating modes for gaming, surfing and working
