Nvidia DLSS 3: Frame Generation can be used with AMD FSR and Intel XeSS

As Igor's Lab has now found out, the “Frame Generation” feature, originally developed and intended for Nvidia DLSS 3, can also be activated and used in games with AMD FSR 2.1 and Intel XeSS .

Frame generation analyzed with DLSS, FSR and XeSS

Like Igor Wallossek and Fritz Hunter were able to prove with corresponding benchmarks, Nvidia's “Frame Generation”, which as the backbone of DLSS 3 should double or fivefold the frame rate depending on the requirements of the GPU, can also be used with competing upscaling technologies such as AMD FSR 2.1 and Intel Combine the first generation XeSS and use it on Nvidia Ada Lovelace. The GeForce RTX 4090 (test) and Spider-Man Remastered (test) were used here.

Igor's lab tested the following upsampling technologies, which all worked perfectly, to the surprise of the testers:

  • DLSS Frame Generation + DLSS Super Resolution< /li>
  • DLSS Frame Generation + FidelityFX Super Resolution
  • DLSS Frame Generation + Intel Xe Super Sampling

According to the results obtained, there are minor performance differences between DLSS and FSR in terms of performance with activated “frame generation”, only Intel XeSS still lags behind the two top dogs. FSR 2.1 takes first place in the ultra-performance preset.

The analysis can be seen as a first taste of AMD's approach to FSR 3.0, which is also set to double frame rates in 2023. Here, too, with the new “Fluid Motion Frames” it is very likely that artificially interpolated frames, the so-called intermediate frames, will also be used.

Finally, it can be said: Nvidia's implementation of “Frame Generation” works with the in-house DLSS Super Sampling, but also with AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, which is still a good deal behind the established competition, especially in terms of frame times.

In terms of image quality, all three upsampling technologies in Spider-Man Remastered are convincing and differ in particular in the quality pre set only for nuances.
