The demand for batteries is; destined to increase significantly over the next few years. More & ugrave; specifically, with global demand for batteries set to grow by about 25% annually until 2030, capacity; recycling of RPA (Waste Batteries and Accumulators) should increase by at least 25 times to meet the need for raw materials, especially the critical ones, necessary for their production.
< p> The EU is expected to occupy a growing share of the global market, rising from 17% to 26% by 2030. This is; what emerges from a research carried out for Erion Energy , the Erion System Consortium dedicated to the management of Waste Batteries and Accumulators. The research & quot; The European regulation on batteries and challenges for the value chain & quot; & egrave; was conducted by Federico Magalini, Director Sustainability Services UK & amp; Italy of the company consulting dss + and & egrave; was presented at Ecomondo 2022.
THE REPORT
More & ugrave; in detail, this study examines the context in which the new Regulation is introduced, analyzing the provisions that the various players in the battery supply chain must comply with. The biggest increase in battery demand will come, as can be seen. well imagine, from the transport sector, together with that of energy storage. The study reports that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles are estimated to outperform internal combustion engine car sales, with estimated annual growth of 23% in both categories through 2030. .
Precisely for this reason, given the strong increase in demand for batteries for electric cars in the coming years, the European Union intends to work to become self-sufficient in the production of batteries for electric vehicles by 2025. Lo study shows that the real challenge will be around; the raw materials .
In fact, it is highlighted that to date, the European Union produces only 1% of those needed for the manufacture of batteries. For this, at the moment there & # 39; & egrave; the urgency of creating an internal market that reduces the risk of dependence on foreign countries for the supply of raw materials.
Precisely for this reason, the proposal for the draft of the New Regulation, adopted by European Parliament on 10 March 2022, introduces rules that regulate the entire life cycle of batteries and aims to encourage the transition from the current linear model to a circular system.
In fact, with 2,500,000 tons placed on the market every year and with a quantity similar waste products, Italy and Europe have not yet reached full circularity, recording a return rate of less than 45% (Italy, in 2021, settled at 30% for the collection of portable batteries exhausted, and 40% for that of waste of automotive batteries and industrial batteries).
Among the objectives of the new European regulation there is; also that of limiting the negative social and environmental impacts of the battery life cycle, setting minimum levels of mandatory recycled content for the production of new batteries. For example, the recycling of lead-acid batteries can reduce impacts by 49% compared to primary supply.
On the other hand, recycled aluminum has a CO2 footprint that is 96% lower than that of primary, while for lithium, nickel and cobalt the reduction is; 38%. The report adds that battery life-cycle studies have shown that end-of-life treatment accounts for only a small fraction (less than 5%) of the total production impacts and that it can; substantially limit the environmental consequences with respect to primary production. Laura Castelli , General Manager of Erion Energy, commented:
The many challenges that we will face do not scare us, on the contrary they encourage us to support more and more; our Producers, to help them to adopt the numerous requirements introduced by the Regulation and to facilitate their communication with the other actors of the system (such as the treatment plants). In particular, as a Consortium we will be called to reach new and more; ambitious collection targets by 2030: 70% for portable batteries and 54% for batteries for light transport vehicles (LMT). The new Regulation promotes a much more; strategic and sustainable management of batteries and related resource flows, regulating, with a single legal instrument, the entire life cycle and guaranteeing homogeneity; in the internal market in Europe.
