The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, which Nvidia canceled shortly after its launch, is expected to make a comeback in January 2023 as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. The so far smallest model of the Ada Lovelace generation should fit better into Nvidia's portfolio under this new name and with unchanged specifications.

As the Twitter user @kopite7kimi, who is known for pre-releases, reports via the short message service, Nvidia is said to be planning a replacement for the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, which was canceled on October 14th, in January 2023, which is to be known as the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti.
The original RTX 4080 12GB will become RTX 4070 Ti instead.

Many ComputerBase readers also assumed this step in the comments on the discontinuation of the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB. The gap between the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB with AD103 GPU and 9,728 shaders and the smaller GeForce RTX 4080 12GB with AD104 GPU and 7,680 shaders was just too big.
Same specifications under new name
Nothing should change in the key data of the alleged GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, but the new nomenclature would fit much better into the portfolio of the new graphics cards in terms of computing power.

Nvidia is thus responding to the criticism that the graphics card formerly known as the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB is more of a GeForce RTX 4070 (Ti) or even a GeForce RTX 4060 (Ti), in particular due to the narrow 192-bit memory interface. Nvidia itself recently described the naming of the two RTX 4080 as “confusing”.

Radeon RX 7800 XT as potential opponent
With the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT, AMD has also announced two potential competitors for the GeForce RTX 4080, which the 12 GB version is expected to match in terms of grid performance would have failed. A potential AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT fits the picture much better as an opponent.
