As part of the announcement of the quarterly figures for the third quarter of 2022, Sony again announced sales figures for the PlayStation 5 (test). With 3.3 million units sold, sales of the current console generation stagnated at the level of the previous year. The users of the new PlayStation Plus subscription model are even falling.

Stagnating sales of the PS5

With 3.3 million PlayStation 5s sold, Sony achieved the same sales as in the 3rd quarter of 2021, which corresponds to the 2nd quarter of Sony's own financial year. Since the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has been able to sell a little more than 25 million units of the current games console.

Sony had aimed for total sales of 18 million units for the current financial year and is surprisingly sticking to it even after the latest numbers.

With 2.4 million and 3.3 million units of the PlayStation 5, Sony is still a long way from this goal. In the second half of 2021, Sony was able to sell 5.9 million PlayStation 5, now it should be 12.3 million consoles within 6 months. The fact that Sony can still achieve this seems almost impossible simply because of the continued tense, albeit somewhat improved, delivery situation – Sony announced in May that it wanted to be able to cover the demand in the short term. On the other hand, sales of a total of 12 million to 14 million units in the entire financial year seems realistic, should Sony not be able to increase production even more in the short term.

For the coming year, Sony is even planning to sell a total of 23 million PlayStation 5.

Sales are growing, also thanks to the price increase

< p class="p text-width">Nevertheless, despite stagnating sales, Sony was able to increase sales in the past quarter by 12 percent year-on-year, which is also due to the price increase of the PlayStation 5. However, profits fell 49 percent due to the Bungie purchase and higher developer costs.

Fewer games sold, more sales

Game sales fell from 76.4 million to 62.5 million copies, but revenue still rose from 645.4 billion to 720.7 billion yen (about 4. 9 billion euros) will be increased, which is partly due to the weak yen. The proportion of games purchased digitally increased slightly from 62 percent to 63 percent.

The new PlayStation Plus is not yet fired

Despite the sweeping changes to the subscription service PlayStation Plus, which combines PlayStation Now and the old PlayStation Plus and also launched in Europe in June, the number of subscribers has fallen again. Instead of 47.3 million users 3 months ago, the service now only has 45.4 million subscribers.
