In addition to a completely new Witcher part, CD Projekt Red is planning a remake of the very first game with Witcher Geralt from 2007. Chic graphics are assured, gameplay changes seem obvious. However, the studio does not swing the pen itself, but only takes over the “creative supervision”.

A “modern reinterpretation” of the first Witcher is announced, which, like the promised second Witcher saga, will be based around a new witcher based on Unreal Engine 5. That promises contemporary and handsome graphics that the original can no longer match, even in the improved Enhanced Edition. During development, the same tools should be used that are also used for the new Witcher saga. The use of synergy effects is obviously in the foreground here.

Clear changes are obvious

The announcement of a reinterpretation also suggests major changes to the game concept. These seem absolutely necessary: The Witcher trilogy has developed in clear steps. Only part 2 offered action from the third person, only the third part a really freely accessible, open game world. In the original, the camera was still hovering over the witcher in a top-down perspective, the controls were based more on classic role-playing games, and Geralt's path was guided by insurmountable fences. The numerous erotic trading cards that Geralt receives in the original game as a reward for having sex with two dozen women are also completely outdated and unimaginable under current conditions.

Therefore, an adaptation of the material to the formula of The Witcher 3 seems logical. Thus, by discarding the rather special niche concept, a larger target group could be reached, as well as the one that has grown massively through Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Appeal to a fan base that the series only gained with its climax in the third part. At the same time, players could also be reached who had little to do with the cRPG borrowings from The Witcher and the still edgy concept.

Veterans at work

The remake is being made under the supervision of CD Projekt Red at Fool's Theory. There work veterans of the Witcher series who can show the appropriate experience. The studio has also been involved in role-playing games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 in the past. There is currently no further information about the game, the work is still in an early phase.
