Without much ado, Shell has closed all its hydrogen filling stations in the UK . The oil giant had opened 3 stations to allow cars to fill up with hydrogen. These distributors had opened between 2017 and 2019 in Gatwick, Cobham and Beaconsfield. Following this agreed decision with operator Motive, only 11 hydrogen refueling stations remain open in the UK.

All three distributors were partially funded by European Fuel Cells Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (now known as the Clean Hydrogen Partnership) and the UK Office of Low Emission Vehicles (now called the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles).

Refueling points slightly more; that & quot; prototypes & quot; so much so that Shell explained that they had reached the end of their life cycle. In any case, the business of hydrogen refueling stations did not & egrave; proven sustainable due to the lack of Fuel Cell cars on the roads.

NOT? A GOODBYE TO HYDROGEN

However, for Shell this is not a goodbye to hydrogen. In fact, the company has made it known that it is evaluating the possibility; to create new stationsfor heavy vehicles to be made in the United Kingdom as well. The old stations were not reusable for the new purpose as they were too small to accommodate the trucks.

What has been learned over time, however, will allow; Shell to build better refueling stations.

We have invested over £ 2 million a year to run our small stations, but we have decided it is not; sustainable to continue making this investment.

Shell's decision also reflects the current trend that hydrogen is a potentially interesting technology only for heavy vehicles and not for cars. By way of comparison, if there are currently 11 hydrogen stations left in the UK, there are over 57,000 charging points for electric cars.
