Lenovo and its subsidiary Motorola are demonstrating new OLED displays for rollout at this year's in-house exhibition, Lenovo Tech World 2022, which are to be used in the companies' upcoming smartphones and notebooks. As of today, the concept is still a dream of the future.
Lenovo and Motorola demonstrate rollable prototypes
Under the motto “Rollable Form Factor Innovations”, Lenovo and Motorola demonstrated both a smartphone and a notebook at Lenovo Tech World 2022 that have an adaptive OLED display, which rolls out automatically on request and depending on the content and adapts to the respective content.
In the case of the demonstrated smartphone, a 6.5-inch OLED display is used, which when rolled up only measures 4 inches diagonally.
Lenovo and Motorola unveiled rollable proof of concepts for smartphones and laptop computers, ushering in a new potential era where this unique form factor enables more content and offers huge possibilities for the future to improve hybrid work and life.
Designed to elevate multi-tasking, browsing, and mobile use cases, the new rollable proof of concepts are compact, yet don't sacrifice screen size – enabling content on screen to be dynamically adjusted to the device as the expandable screen rolls inward into the base of the laptop, and smartphone.

The demonstrated prototype of a 14″ notebook also significantly expands the vertical area of its OLED display when a higher demand for usable workspace or rendered content make this necessary. However, the manufacturers do not reveal the size to which the notebook panel can be rolled out.
Rollable OLED displays are still a thing of the future
Rollable OLED displays for smartphones, notebooks, monitors and smart TVs are still a thing of the future. LG also showed a corresponding prototype at CES 2021 with the LG Rollable, but dropped the concept for the time being.
Oppo already had it as part of the “Oppo Inno Day 20”. 2020 gave an outlook on future products and demonstrated the Oppo X 2021, whose display has changed from 6.8" to 7.4″ roll out. The targeted market maturity in 2021 did not materialize in this case either. So far, TLC has also only shown extendable prototypes.
