Foreign. After European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen refused to hand over her text messages with Pfizer's CEO, the EU prosecutor's office EPPO now confirms that a criminal investigation has been opened in connection with the vaccine purchases during the corona pandemic.

It is unclear whether the investigation concerns Ursula von der Leyen or another EU high-ranking official, but the EPPO is a prosecutor's office that deals with high-level corruption within the Union and its various bodies.
“The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) confirms that it is handling an ongoing investigation into the procurement of covid-19 vaccines in the EU. This exceptionally rare confirmation follows extremely high public interest in the matter. No further details will be made public at this stage,” EPPO writes in a press release.
Many reacted when the European Commission produced special vaccine passports and a series of other coercive measures when the relatively mild virus variant omikron had already taken over the Union. The mortality rate in the disease had then fallen far below the level that applies to ordinary influenza.
The vaccines that entitled EU residents to vaccine passports were also relatively ineffective against omicrons.
The EU Commission rejected however, all speculation about corruption and instead claimed that the extensive vaccine program was medically justified.
