Western Digital expands the range of external SSDs from the SanDisk Professional brand. The new Pro-G40 SSD offers 1 TB or 2 TB of storage space in an aluminum housing that is protected against dust and water, as well as high transfer rates of up to 2,700 MB/s via Thunderbolt. However, the prices are tough.

Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.2

Designed as the new top model in the field of external storage solutions for professional users, the SanDisk Pro-G40 SSD is compatible with two interfaces with different performance: Thunderbolt 3 promises transfer rates of up to 2,700 MB/s for reading and 1,900 MB/s for writing , the built-in NVMe SSD is the limit here. If the host system only supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 with 10 Gbit/s, then a maximum of 1,050 MB/s reading and 1,000 MB/s writing should be possible.

In the case measuring 111 × 58 × 12 mm (L × W × H) there is an unspecified NAND flash usable storage capacities of 1 TB or 2 TB. The two variants weigh 121 grams and 122 grams; the additional memory chips in the 2 TB model also weigh a little. A Thunderbolt 3 cable with USB-C connector is included.

Protection against dust, water and falls

The manufacturer describes the Pro-G40 as extremely robust and advertises that it is “fall-safe from a height of up to three meters”, with a footnote pointing out that a fall onto carpet is meant. The IP68 certification is more tangible and, according to binding guidelines, means that the SSD is dustproof and also waterproof, at least to a depth of one meter.

The housing material is intended to ensure that high transfer rates are possible even over longer periods of use, since aluminum is known to dissipate heat much better than plastic.

The portable SSD is ideal for creative professionals who, for example, want to edit 4K videos in real time and directly from the data carrier, or others who require fast data transfers. But the price is something to behold: The recommended retail price for the Pro-G40 with 1 TB is 471 euros and the 2 TB model costs a whopping 740 euros.

The Editors initially thought the pricing was in error, as US prices are around $300 and $450, excluding taxes. However, upon request from the manufacturer, the confirmation and the following statement followed:

The pricing of our product lines varies worldwide due to various factors. These include duties, taxes, fees and exchange rates. Post-launch, MSRPs are also subject to change based on market conditions.
