In the current episode of Svenska Nyheter there was, among other things, a segment where the name of the program was changed to “Kurdish News with Kadir Meral” and a Kurdish comedian mocked the Turkish president.

The fact that this was broadcast on state Swedish television is “unacceptable”, announces Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They have summoned Sweden's ambassador Staffan Herrström to get an explanation.

The feature has previously attracted attention in Turkish media.

“The scandalous program was broadcast – even though Turkey has the option of vetoing the application if the countries do not accept Turkey's demands,” wrote the daily Sabah, for example.

Ebba Adielsson, responsible publisher for Svenska Nyheter, states that the Turkish criticism will not affect the program's content in the future.

“Svenska nyheter is a satire program where we make light jokes about current politics and those in power. In Sweden, we have freedom of speech and a free press, the scope for humor and satire is very wide,” she writes in an email to Expressen.
