On the night of January 27, an apartment building was evacuated after a strong explosion in an apartment in Västerås.

In the apartment where the explosion took place, there was a man who was injured and was taken to hospital, where he was treated for some time before the police could question him.

The man lost three fingers after the incident, among other things.

During the course of the investigation, suspicions arose that it was the man who accidentally caused the explosion in the apartment. The man, a 38-year-old Swede, was then suspected of causing public destruction and was later arrested for the crime.

During later house searches, objects, chemicals and explosives that can be used to make explosive charges were found, which further strengthened the suspicions against the man. IT equipment was also seized where the police found footage showing several small explosions outside (not aimed at anyone in particular), for which the man and another man are suspected.

The investigation also revealed information that the man has bought a liquid that he does not have permission to possess and store, which has led to him and a company that sold the liquid now being suspected of breaking the Explosives Precursors Act.

There is no information known to the police about what motive is behind the crimes, thus also no information about connections to criminal environments or planned acts.

Today charges are brought against the 38-year-old, who has been in custody since February this year. He is suspected of, among other things, a violation of the Act on Explosive Precursors, a violation of the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods (serious crime), preparation for public dangerous devastation and public dangerous devastation.

The man himself denies any crime and claims that he did not remember something of the incident.
