The manufacturer is now launching the 12T and 12T Pro after the Xiaomi 12 series presented in spring. Both smartphones have high-resolution camera sensors to enable zooming on the sensor. In addition, fast processors and large batteries are installed. The 12T starts at 600 euros, the 12T Pro costs 800 euros.

12T Pro uses a 200MP sensor from Samsung

Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro are largely identically equipped, but differ in certain features of the cameras and the built-in processors. The 12T Pro sets itself apart with a new 200 MP sensor, which the manufacturer uses with 2.56 μm pixels on an area of 1/1.22″ applies. To achieve this edge length for each pixel, 16 pixels with a native size of 0.64 μm are stitched together to create a 12.5 MP photo. For comparison: In the iPhone 14 Pro Max (test), the native pixels are 1.22 μm, but a 12 MP photo with 2.44 μm pixels is usually generated from the 48 MP.

The larger pixels are said to be particularly helpful when taking pictures with poor lighting conditions and can be used in two different stages. In addition to the output in 12.5 MP, only four pixels can be combined for a resolution of 50 MP. You can also use the camera app settings to take photos with the native resolution of 200 MP.

The sensor comes from Samsung and goes by the name ISOCELL HP1. This is the same sensor that Motorola uses for the Edge 30 Ultra. Other features of Xiaomi are an aperture of f/1.69 and optical image stabilization (OIS). In video mode, the 12T Pro is designed for up to 8K resolution. A night mode is available for video recordings as well as for photos.

Double enlargement via crop on the sensor

For photography, the high-resolution sensor offers the option of zooming on the sensor by no longer using its entire surface, but only a section of it. The so-called in-sensor zoom can be used on the 12T Pro up to a double magnification, beyond that it is digitally zoomed. In order to get a pre-selection of potential motifs to which the image can be cropped, the new “Xiaomi ProCut” feature can be used, which uses AI to produce a series of crops that are generated based on people and objects in the image. With the “Xiaomi ProFocus” the auto focus can be set on a person or an object, whereby people can also be marked with eye auto focus.

108 MP for the Xiaomi 12T

The regular 12T uses the 1/1.67" large ISOCELL HM6 from Samsung, which has a native resolution of 108 MP, but outputs the image in 12 MP in regular photo mode, so that in this model 9 pixels are combined into one rather than 16. This measure increases the edge length of the pixels from 0.64 to 1.92 μm. The device does not support zooming on the sensor or Xiaomi ProCut, but an OIS and night modes for photos and videos are also on board.

Identical second and third camera

The smartphones are on the same level in terms of the second and third cameras as well as the selfie camera. Ultra wide-angle photos each takes a 1/4" large 8 MP sensor with 1.12 μm pixels and f/2.2 aperture, while for macro photos a 2 MP sensor with a size of only 1/5" with a pixel size of 1.75 μm. Selfies are handled via a 20 MP camera in the display, whose sensor is 1/3.47" measures.

120 Hz AMOLED display with 1220p resolution

Parity also prevails with the screens, each of which uses a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel that offers an interesting intermediate level between 1080p and 1440p with 2,712 × 1,220 pixels. Both variants can be played with 30, 60, 90 and 120 Hz, support adaptive HDR10+ and should achieve a brightness of 500 cd/m² in normal and up to 900 cd/m² in outdoor mode. The manufacturer protects the panel with Gorilla Glass 5 from Corning and also accommodates an optical fingerprint sensor.

MediaTek Dimensity 8100 im 12T

However, there is a split in the portfolio when it comes to the processors used. The 12T uses the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 from TSMC's 5 nm manufacturing (N5). The SoC has four Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores with up to 2.85 GHz and 2.00 GHz respectively, which are combined with a Mali-G610 MC6 as GPU. There are two memory configurations for the 12T, 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the 12T Pro

The 12T Pro, on the other hand, uses Qualcomm's current flagship, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (benchmark) from TSMC's 4 nm production (N4). The SoC comes with newer Arm Cortex cores, which are divided into an X2 with up to 3.20 GHz, three A710 with up to 2.75 GHz and four A510 with a maximum of 2.00 GHz. With the Adreno 730, the chip also offers one of the fastest mobile GPUs for smartphones. There are basically three memory configurations of the 12T Pro, with only the 8 GB/256 GB model coming to Germany.

5,000 mAh battery with 120 watts -Load

A battery with 5,000 mAh each, which this time can be charged with up to 120 watts, should achieve long runtimes. The manufacturer had launched the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro with 4,500 and 4,600 mAh and a charging capacity of 67 watts and 120 watts. In contrast to the 12 series, wireless charging is not available in the 12T series. For both new variants, the manufacturer states a loading time of 19 minutes to 100 percent and promises screen-on times of up to 13.5 hours.

Other features of both smartphones are stereo speakers, but only the 12T Pro comes with a system tuned by Harman Kardon that supports Dolby Atmos within the capabilities of a smartphone. Dual SIM is also on board, but with the support of an eSIM, the 12T Pro also has an advantage in this regard. Both smartphones come with Android 12 and their own MIUI 13 attachment. The 12T Pro is to receive three Android upgrades and four years of security patches early buyers bundled with tablets

Xiaomi wants to presell the 12T series in black, blue and silver shortly after the presentation at 3 p.m. today, before the regular market launch is planned for October 13th. The recommended retail price for the 12T with 8 GB/128 GB is EUR 599.90 and with 8 GB/256 GB it is EUR 649.90. For the 12T Pro with 8 GB/256 GB, Xiaomi is asking 799.90 euros. Further storage configurations are not yet planned for the German market.
