Matter 1.0 is here!

The standard is intended to ensure that smart home accessories become widely compatible. The press release about this can be found in the CSA's newsroom (but cannot be accessed at the time of writing). Companies that want to participate in Matter can now really get started. They can build Matter into their platforms (like Apple HomeKit) and provide support in their accessories (like the IKEA Dirigera hub discussed earlier today). Apple has already made a first step by laying the foundation for Matter in iOS 16.1. So it could just be available in the course of this month. Then the only stumbling block is finding enough accessories.

Matter is an IP-based protocol that is available worldwide and which, according to CEO Tobin Richardson, will revolutionize the Internet of Things. Small and large companies participate. It works over WiFi and Thread, a fairly new way to connect accessories.

Now that Matter 1.0 is available, companies can have their product certified in a test lab, use the tools made available and use the SDK. Existing accessories can be updated to support Matter. This is possible as soon as the products are certified. Initially – just like HomeKit – only a limited number of product categories are allowed, such as lamps, sensors, door locks, window coverings, air conditioning controls and hubs. More will follow later. The default was delayed several times.
