Car manufacturers are working to reduce CO2 emissions across the cycle of life of their cars. In the case of electric vehicles, work is underway to create truly sustainable production processes also as regards the production of batteries inside gigafactory . And precisely in order to design future sustainable gigafactories, the European project GIGAGREEN has taken off, which sees Italy as the protagonist given that is at the helm of this project. the Polytechnic of Turin .

The project & egrave; funded with almost 4.7 million euros by the European Union under the Horizon Europe framework program for research and innovation, aimed at developing sustainable and safe cell production processes for batteries lithium-ion.

4 YEARS OF WORK

To this project 16 partners from 8 different European countries will work for 4 years including Sustainable Innovations, ABEE, Solvionic, Leclanche, Nanomakers, Universit & agrave; of Parma, Universit & agrave; Polytechnic University of Valencia, Sintef, Inegi Porto, Cic Energigune, Arlanxeo, Alphanov, Manz Italy, CETIM and Johnson Matthey.

The goal is; that of achieving creating the sustainable gigafactory of the future , placing Europe at the forefront of the global market in the value chain of lithium-ion batteries, critical for the next generation of electric vehicles.

So, as mentioned above. start, the Polytechnic of Turin will coordinate & agrave; this project. In addition, will exploit & agrave; its pilot line to make some small cell prototypes. This is the first university; Italian to have a small pilot line useful for the development of lithium-ion cell production lines.

This production line will serve; also for the training of new professional figures more and more; requests at European level: in fact, according to the latest estimates, 800,000 new workers will be needed in the sector. Projects like GIGAGREEN will give the opportunity & agrave; many students to arrive prepared for the appointment with the electric transition of the next few years.

Entering more in detail of the project, the partners will work to & quot; develop and scale new production processes of electrodes and cell components that follow a data-based Design to Manufacture approach to achieve the set objectives of optimizing flexibility; of factories, scalability; processes and sustainability; overall production lines & quot ;.

Therefore, the project will deal with of the research of production processes of the electrodes that guarantee the maximum performances, speed; of production, safety and cost efficiency with minimal environmental impact and energy consumption in the design of the cell, also facilitating reuse and disassembly.

It is believed that the results that will emerge from the GIGAGREEN project & quot; a smooth transition between current processing methods, optimized by trial and error approaches and not ready for flexible mass production, and the lithium-ion cell factory of the future, based on more technology; ecological, more & ugrave; cheaper, more safer, better, more & ugrave; clean, digitized and flexible & quot ;.

Results that can be applied after 2026 in order to improve competitiveness; of the battery industry in Europe.
