With the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), Google has announced a new streaming stick that is now commercially available for EUR 39.99. The new model represents a cheaper alternative to the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), which was introduced in 2020 and has a recommended retail price of 69.99 euros.

1080p with 60 FPS

Instead of 4K, the new model – as the name suggests – uses a resolution of up to 1080p with up to 60 frames per second and supports HDR, with the HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG standards being available (no Dolby Vision). In terms of audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos (via HDMI loop-through) are also offered in addition to Dolby Digital. The Google Assistant is also on board, for which the remote control again has its own button for activating voice input. Game streaming via Google Stadia (first impression) is also part of the package at launch, as is now the case with the 4K model. In terms of design, the new variant sticks to the exterior of the 4K version and looks identical. The dimensions (162.5 × 61 × 12.5 mm) and the weight of 55 grams are also identical. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11 b/g/n/ac) is used for the WLAN connection, with 2, 4 and 5 GHz are supported.

No restrictions in the software

There are no software restrictions with the cheaper model, so that the more than 10,000 apps that are now available for the Android-based Google TV can also be used on the Chromecast with Google TV (HD). These include apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies and Google Play Music, but also Joyn, RTL+, ARD, ZDF, DAZN, Zattoo, WaipuTV, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video or Peloton to play workouts on the TV via the Chromecast. To be able to use the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) with multiple people, each with their own watchlists and suggestions, it supports multiple profiles.

In addition to the HDMI dongle and the remote control, the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) comes with a USB-C power cable and the 7.5-watt power adapter.

Google has not given any technical details about the SoC and memory in advance of the announcement. According to rumors, an Amlogic S805X2 SoC with 1.5 gigabytes of RAM will form the technical basis. The size of the internal memory remains to be clarified. Rumors of a cheaper Chromecast with Google TV have been around since the beginning of the year, and the now official model appeared at the FCC in June.
