Several car manufacturers are organizing how to manage the batteries of electric cars at the end of their life. In addition to projects related to recycling to recover raw materials useful for making new accumulators, manufacturers are carrying out initiatives aimed at giving batteries a second life . As we know, if the accumulators are still in good condition, they can still be used for several years inside the accumulation systems .

And precisely on the theme of & quot; second life & quot; of batteries, an interesting news arrives involving Kia Europe. The automaker has confirmed plans to reuse old electric vehicle batteries within storage systems as part of its sustainability goals.

THE PROJECT

To carry the Korean brand forward, collaborer & agrave; with the German start-up Encore who will take care of to receive the battery packs of Kia cars from all over Europe and then use them to build the storage systems. All battery packs are first disassembled at module level and then subjected to a series of diagnostic tests. If still in good condition and with sufficient capacity; residual, the modules are adapted and used in the storage systems. Otherwise the batteries are recycled.

The two companies & agrave; have just presented a prototype of a storage system at the EUREF-Campus in Berlin , made entirely with the battery modules of the Kia Soul EV . It will be used to store the energy produced by the photovoltaic systems present on site, to then be used at a later time, reducing the campus' dependence on the electricity grid.

The storage system is; composed of 24 battery modules arranged on three racks for a total of 72 kWh . A BMS made by STABL Energy manages the storage system. Kia's bond with Encore is not; the first of its kind. For example, Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Pramac to build storage systems using Jaguar i-Pace batteries. Audi and Skoda, on the other hand, have also entered into agreements respectively with RWE and IBG Cesko, to reuse the discarded batteries from Audi e-tron, Skoda Enyaq iV, Skoda Octavia iV and Skoda Superb iV.

Jason Jeong , President of Kia Europe, commented on this project:

With our success in electrification of Kia models, we also take responsibility for it. of batteries beyond their lifespan in cars. The pioneering partnership between Kia and Encore demonstrates that we consider batteries a valuable resource in terms of a sustainable circular economy.
