Huawei Watch D: blood pressure cuff with pump in the smartwatch

With the Watch D, Huawei's smartwatch, which can measure blood pressure via a cuff integrated into the bracelet with a micro pump, is coming to Germany. In addition to measuring blood pressure with a cuff, it also has an ECG function. Almost all certifications should now be completed, so that it can start soon.

Micropump for blood pressure measurement

According to Huawei, it took six years to develop the micropump, which builds up the necessary air pressure in the bracelet to measure blood pressure. It builds up a pressure of 40 kPa in order to be able to measure a blood pressure between 40 and 230 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). Huawei specifies the accuracy on the right wrist as ±3 mmHg. The Huawei Watch D measures both the higher systolic value and the lower diastolic value. Since an optical sensor is not used like in many other smartwatches, the blood pressure monitor does not have to be calibrated, it was already calibrated at the factory. The Huawei Watch D will be launched in Europe as a certified medical device, so the measured values can be considered correct.

Blood pressure measurement with the Huawei Watch D

For the measurement, the smartwatch must fit the wrist with the correct bracelet size, which is why Huawei is using a template at the IFA to set the correct bracelet size. The measurement should be taken while seated with the arm bent diagonally in front of the body. As with a classic blood pressure monitor, the cuff is then inflated and the measurement is taken. With the TruSeen 5.0+ sensor, the Watch D also measures heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, skin temperature, stress level and monitors sleep.

Waterproof and 7 days of battery life

The Huawei Watch D has an aluminum housing that is waterproof to IP68 – the smartwatch can therefore be temporarily submerged despite the integrated blood pressure cuff. Huawei says the battery life is typically 7 days, with six blood pressure measurements and six ECGs per day and 90 minutes of exercise per day. It is charged wirelessly via a magnetic charging adapter.

Heavy watch with AMOLED display

Bluetooth 5.1 and WLAN with 2.4 GHz are used for the connection to the smartphone. The display is a 1.64 inch AMOLED display. The Watch D weighs 91.5 grams, which is relatively heavy due to the technology used to measure blood pressure. The Watch D measures 51 × 38 × 13.6 mm.

Start in Germany in autumn

The Huawei Watch D will be available in black in Germany in autumn 2022. Huawei has not yet announced a price.

ComputerBase has received information about this article from Huawei under the NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible publication date.
