With the Voyager a1600, Corsair is venturing into another market segment that is predicted to have a bright future. The debut work cleverly sets itself apart from the crowd, not only because it meets all the requirements for the AMD Advantage certificate. The test, including benchmarks, clarifies what else it has to offer.

The Corsair Voyager a1600 in detail

Long gone are the days when Corsair was only a supplier of OC-RAM modules. Today, the manufacturer is a “full-range supplier” in the PC sector: peripherals, cases, power supplies, SSDs, PC systems and, most recently, even monitors – the only thing missing from the portfolio was actually a notebook. And now there is that too. That is understandable, as this market segment is still predicted to continue to grow, while the desktop PC has recently fallen sharply again after a Corona high.

Corsair's first notebook: The Voyager a1600 with Ryzen 6000 Mobile and Radeon RX 6800M

Not just another notebook

Corsair has obviously done a lot to ensure that the Voyager a1600 doesn't simply become “another notebook on the market”. These include:

  • The Corsair Voyager a1600 is based on a pure AMD platform with Ryzen 6000 Mobile and Radeon RX 6000 Mobile and carries the AMD Advantage certificate. Current technologies such as FreeSync Premium, SmartShift Max/Eco, Smart Access Memory and Graphics etc. pp. are therefore supported. At the same time, the notebook was guaranteed the big stage at CES 2022, because AMD's CEO Dr. Lisa Su was presented in her keynote.
  • The Corsair Voyager a1600 relies on an all-aluminum chassis with a matt 16-inch IPS display in 16:10 format, which has a very high resolution of QHD+ and 240 Hertz is very fast.
  • The Elgato Stream Deck, with which streamers can call up essential functions in their setup at the touch of a button, is positioned as a touch bar above the keyboard, can be freely configured and can also be operated when it is closed, which is always an advantage when the Notebook is operated as a desktop replacement on external screens.
  • The Corsair Voyager a1600 offers USB 4.0 ports that support Thunderbolt 3.
  • The battery is at the limit with 99 Wh , which is permitted in international air traffic, the keyboard relies on Cherry's particularly flat and quiet MX Ultra Low Profile Tactile and the trackpad is record-breakingly large at 15.5 × 10.0 cm.
  • Customers are allowed to open the Corsair Voyager a1600 under warranty and upgrade or exchange components (RAM, SSD, WLAN module).

Not off the shelf ” Standard” is also the user interface in the BIOS, which does not offer the buyer any OC or timing features, but presents the available functions in a modern and clear way.

The BIOS of the Corsair Voyager a1600

Corsair markets the system as a “gaming and streaming laptop.” What this ultimately means for the customer will be clarified in the test below.

Model variants and prices

In any case, Corsair makes it easy for customers to start by selecting their preferred variant, because there are only two that differ in terms of CPU, RAM and SSD. Specifically, the Voyager a1600 relies on a mobile Ryzen CPU from the Rembrandt series, Ryzen 7 6800HS or Ryzen 9 6900HS, and a mobile Radeon RX 6800M (test).

Depending on the configuration chosen, Corsair delivers the notebook with two 16 or two 32 GB DDR5 in SO-DIMM format – the memory is therefore not soldered. The same applies to the 1 or 2 TB SSD ex works. When it comes to storage, Corsair guarantees a product from its own portfolio (Vengeance), but not for the SSD – depending on availability, products from manufacturers such as Samsung could also be used here, as with the Corsair One i300 tower PC.

Most interested parties will certainly not find it easy to get hold of, because the variants cost 3,299.99 and 3,699.99 euros respectively.

The editors were able to test the larger of the two variants in advance under the NDA Disposal. After switching on, the notebook welcomes the user with a tour of the Voyager Hub, which bundles the services installed by Corsair/Elgato and their options from iCUE to Stream Deck and the Camera Hub to AMD Adrenalin.

Ryzen 9 6900HS + Radeon RX 6800M

How fast the CPU and dGPU are in the Corsair Voyager a1600 , depends on the selected profile and power supply.

Key data, profiles & Performance

Corsair has defined three profiles in the BIOS (controllable via iCUE):

  • Extreme
  • Balanced
  • Quiet

Each profile gives a separate maximum consumption for CPU and dGPU as well as a combined maximum consumption before. This in turn depends on whether the notebook is powered by the 230-watt hollow plug power supply unit, a 100-watt USB-C charger or the battery. Corsair itself gave the editors the following limit values depending on profile and power supply.

CPU and GPU power consumption per profile and power supply (Image: Corsair)

In the editor's test, however, the maximum specifications for the Ryzen 9 6900HS could not be reproduced. The 54 (Extreme, Balanced) and 45 watts (Quiet) mentioned by Corsair were all exceeded under constant CPU load in the Blender benchmark. Even the Quiet profile allows the CPU to operate at 50 watts far from the standard TDP in the HS series (35 watts). Interestingly, the 70 watts in the Extreme profile are on the same level as the Ryzen 9 6900HS in the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (test).

In the 3DMark Time Spy, which demands the CPU, but especially the GPU, the combined maximum values mentioned by Corsair can be understood well: In the Extreme profile, the GPU fully exhausts the permitted limit of a maximum of 120 watts, the CPU allows itself the rest, which stays up to the common cap of 147 watts. In the Balanced profile, the 130 watts specified by Corsair are achieved, in the Quiet profile the 90 watts in total.

However, this was not always the case in games. The Witcher 3 (Full HD, high) presented values similar to those of 3DMark, but in Cyberpunk 2077 (FHD, medium) only the extreme profile achieved the combined almost 150 watts, the other profiles missed the target, sometimes significantly, and that on a fluctuating background Level – sometimes the CP 2077 was playable in “Quiet” at 30 FPS, sometimes it stuttered at just over 10 FPS.

The suspicion was that it was due to the profiles, and when asked, Corsair also said that AMD's SmartShift Max (i.e. the automatic distribution of power loss to the CPU and GPU in real time in network operation) is not yet compatible with all games.

Currently, the profiles can only be used sensibly in CPU loads, the performance difference was subsequently reproduced in Blender as an example. In GPU loads, it again depends on whether the Balanced and Quiet profiles get the defined maximum. In 3DMark, where it succeeds, the performance loss is already clear, but considering the positive effects on the volume, it's tolerable. In CP 2077, where there was a problem, this is absolutely not the case.

With AMD Smart Access Graphics it is still stuck

AMD Smart Access Graphics didn't want to do what it was supposed to do on the test sample either. Like Nvidia Advanced Optimus, AMD Smart Access Graphics should in theory automatically connect the internal display to the active GPU (dGPU or iGPU) without manual intervention by the user and without rebooting. However, this does not work in the test, neither with the driver 22.7.1. nor with the driver 21.40.42.02 explicitly mentioned by AMD and Corsair for testing. Instead of redirecting the display from the iGPU to the dGPU when starting a 3D application, there was only a cryptic error message with a wrong reference to DirectX 9.

AMD Smart Access Graphics didn't want to in the test yet

Sending the signal of the dGPU via the iGPU and thus its frame buffer costs performance, as the article gaming notebook says -Benchmarks: Much more FPS in games by MUX switch click recently discussed.

For this reason, the following gaming benchmarks were also carried out with dGPU mode activated in the BIOS. Corsair's tool iCUE offers the profile selection, but cannot (yet) address the MUX switch.

    Test results and benchmarks

    Benchmarks in applications

The following application benchmarks were only carried out in the “Extreme” profile. With this 70-watt TDP profile, the notebook achieves the performance that the same CPU in the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 also achieved with a permanent 70 watts.

    Benchmarks in games

The test course recently created in the article Radeon 680M vs. Iris Xe in the test: Mobile iGPUs from AMD and Intel in a gaming duel was used for the gaming benchmarks. Because the Radeon RX 6800M with a maximum of 120 watts is significantly faster than the currently fastest iGPU, the Radeon 680M, the course was expanded to include Full HD runs in higher detail levels and WQHD benchmarks.

In addition to the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 with Radeon RX 6800S, the Asus ROG Strix G15 with Ryzen 9 5900HX and Radeon RX 6800M with 150 watts was also included in the comparison.

    Unit: percent

The Corsair Voyager a1600 turns out to be 10 to 20 percent faster than the Asus G14 in the gaming course. In FHD with low details, where the CPU has a big influence, it is 10 percent, with high details and in WQHD it is around 20 percent. There are also scenarios that go beyond that – mostly when RT is involved, the 6800S runs out of steam.

Unfortunately, the editors did not have any other notebooks available for a current comparison. In particular, the comparison with mobile GeForce RTX 3000 laptop GPUs is therefore missing in the test.

        16-inch WQHD display with 240 Hertz in 16: 10

Back to the Corsair Voyager a1600 hardware and display. Corsair relies on a 16-inch IPS panel with 2,560 × 1,600 pixels and 240 Hertz in 16:10 format. The display glass is matt. AMD FreeSync Premium is supported.

16 inches in 16:10 format can undoubtedly be described as large and cut a very good figure, especially in everyday office life, even if that results in a deeper chassis. However, Corsair made good use of the space with a huge trackpad.

Corsair did not provide any information on the maximum brightness in the run-up to the presentation, but AMD's FreeSync Premium seal requires at least 300 cd/m². Measurements by the editors ultimately certify the display's average brightness of 361 cd/m². The homogeneity is at a very high level of 91 percent, and there are no visible halos. Backlight bleeding on a black background in a dark environment is also not a problem with the test pattern.

Corsair Voyager a1600 display homogeneity at full Brightness

The measured contrast reached a level of 1138:1 in the test, which is a good value for an IPS panel. The minimum brightness is 17 cd/m², the factory color temperature is 7,100 Kelvin.

Keyboard with Cherry MX ULP and huge trackpad

The keyboard (full size, but without number pad) of the Voyager a1600 is clearly intended to meet the premium requirements and is used for this purpose the recently introduced Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile Tactile (test). At Corsair, the buttons are of course available with RGB lighting, which is configured via iCUE. The keyboard in this notebook is also pleasing.

The keyboard relies on Cherry's flat mechanical MX Ultra Low Profile

In principle, this also applies to the trackpad, which is gigantic at 15.5 × 10.0 centimeters and which again surpasses the variant in the MateBook 16s (test), which was recently described as very large. However, one disadvantage of an extremely large trackpad should not go unmentioned: If you are right-handed and tend to keep your fingers on the left side, you will first have to get used to not accidentally resting your hand on the right edge of the trackpad – because a two-finger swipe gesture becomes a three-finger swipe. There is no automatic error detection of these entries.

The trackpad measures 15.5 x 10.0 cm (iPhone 13 mini)

With stream deck shortcuts for streamers

At first glance, the Voyager a1600's two expansive hinges, which connect the display to the notebook base and allow a large gap to appear between the display and the top cover when opened, catch the eye. The reason for this is the short-cut bar framed above the keyboard in the chassis, which can be configured via Elgato Stream Deck. Thanks to the display hinge design, the ten touch buttons can also be reached when the notebook is closed – i.e. even if the notebook has been connected to one or more external displays for streaming.

Both the function keys (S-Key shortcuts) and the display in the middle can be configured in the Elgato Stream Deck software. If desired, a bar with the assignment can also be permanently displayed above the taskbar in Windows, because the keys light up permanently with S1 to S10. Screen keys would have implemented the symbiosis of the business areas even better with a view to the Elgato range, where there are display keys. Whether and who needs them is another matter.

Even when the lid is closed the touch bar can be reached

        Connections and webcam

Like the “Touchbar”, the 1080p-30 are not a standard on the market -FPS webcam (with physical shutter) and two USB 4.0 ports (type C), which also have Thunderbolt 3 functionality.

Corsair Voyager a1600: connections on the right
        The webcam can be hidden
Corsair Voyager a1600: connections on the left

Other ports are a USB Type C with 10 gps (USB 3.2 Gen 2 = USB 3.1), a USB Type A with 5 gps (USB 3.2 Gen 1 = USB 3.0), an SD card reader (SDXC 7.0) and 3 .5 mm jack. The variety of connections meets the demands of a notebook for media professionals extremely well.

WLAN transmits up to 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6E), Bluetooth version 5.2 is on board. In addition, a receiver for Corsair's proprietary Slipstream wireless technology, which can connect up to three peripheral components, is already integrated. Whether this radio module should be used can be set in the BIOS.

However, the webcam delivered a disappointing performance in the test. The following shots were taken in a corner of the room that was well lit by daylight. The strong noise in the shot seems out of place in view of the high brightness. In addition, the red tint captured in Auto mode (the author was not sunburned and, thank God, does not suffer from high blood pressure) prevents the recorded video signal from even remotely reflecting reality. Corsair needs to do some work here.

The video signal from the 1080p webcam is not convincing

This also applies if a user wants to add effects to the video signal on the 100 percent AMD notebook: The Elgato suite then informs the user that he doesn't have an Nvidia GeForce in the system – he'd rather have the tab Hide entirely.

This Corsair should still prevent error messages on the AMD system

Drives: A cooled NVMe SSD ex works

The Voyager a1600 offers space for two NVMe SSDs in M.2 format connected via PCI Express 4.0. The SSDs dissipate their waste heat to the underside via two thermal pads. One slot is occupied ex works.

The test sample was a Samsung P9A1 with 2 TB, the OEM version of the Samsung 980 Pro (test). This equipment is not guaranteed, as with the Corsair One, alternative models with comparable performance can also be used.

Volume: From quiet to very loud

The behavior of the fan control on the Corsair Voyager a1600 is linked to the profiles, like the maximum power loss. Corsair iCUE actually offers the profiles under the “Cooling” heading.

The profiles (cooling + performance) can be selected via iCUE and in the BIOS

In the Quiet profile, the Corsair Voyager is just that: quiet – both at idle and under load. The fans also spin continuously on the desktop, but this is hardly noticeable and cannot be detected by the measuring device 40 centimeters in front of the display (30 dB is the base measured value without any noise source in the room). Even when working on the desktop, “Quiet” rarely makes the two fans spin faster, although even the measured 36 dB under full load in games can still be described as pleasantly quiet.

        Unit: dB(A)

It looks different in the “Balanced” profile. The basic volume on the desktop remains the same, but the cooling system is stimulated to rev up much more frequently. Under load, the volume increases to a measured 48 dB, which is still below that of an XMG Neo 15 (E22), which is thicker, but the GPU alone draws 175 watts – and not 130 watts in total like that Corsair Voyager a1600 in this profile.

The “Extreme” profile lives up to its name: Even on the desktop, the Voyager a1600 is as “loud” as it is with Quiet under load and surpasses Prime95/with up to 59 decibels in the stress test. Furmark clearly shows the XMG Neo 15 E22.

It is also noticeable that the faster the fans turn, the more the shrill whistle gets the upper hand. The following recordings, taken one centimeter directly above the keyboard, show the key (but not the volume).

        Warranty, maintenance and upgrades

Corsair grants a one-year manufacturer's warranty on the Voyager a1600. Processing is carried out by the dealer or the manufacturer's online stores.

Customers are entitled to open the notebook and exchange or upgrade the RAM, SSD, WLAN/Bluetooth module without violating the guarantee. The bolted 99 Wh battery can also be replaced. The prerequisite is that no components are damaged in the process. This should be possible with expertise and care.

The notebook is opened via the underside, which is attached to the chassis with standard Phillips screws. Said components are then directly accessible.

A look at the hardware inside the Corsair Voyager a1600

        Conclusion

Corsair's first notebook is clearly a Corsair notebook. The start is reminiscent of the manufacturer's first complete system, the Corsair One, which is now available in a significantly optimized version.

Like the One, the Corsair Voyager a1600 comes with a simple design, integrates the latest high-end hardware in a compact, high-quality chassis and offers an attractive image output for gamers and streamers with the large 16-inch display in 16:10 format. The keyboard, touchpad and variety of connections as well as the option of servicing or upgrading essential components within the scope of the warranty are also impressive. The integration of the Elgato Stream Deck as a touch bar that is always accessible is an interesting approach to integrating group-wide technologies into the notebook and gives the Voyager a1600 its own character. However, an implementation with display buttons like in the Elgato Stream Deck MK2 would have been even more consistent.

The touch bar can also be reached when the lid is closed
A look at the hardware inside the Corsair Voyager a1600
An Elgato Stream Deck is integrated via the touch bar
        The trackpad measures 15, 5 x 10.0 cm (iPhone 13 mini)
The keyboard sits on Cherry Flat Mechanical MX Ultra Low Profile
        The webcam can be hidden
Warm air is blown out at the back
The bottom is attached with standard Phillips screws

The performance in CPU loads is also impressive in the test, because a lot is offered in all profiles and thus even in very quiet operation. The Radeon RX 6800M with a maximum of 120 watts is also fast, but with usually only 10 to 20 percent more FPS compared to the Radeon RX 6800S, which is trimmed for efficiency, it is not at the level that can be expected from a 16-inch gaming notebook . This applies in particular to the volume generated by the system under gaming load, which is extremely high in the Extreme profile – and apart from Extreme, the system's performance fell sharply in many gaming scenarios in the test.

AMD Smart Access Graphics, which is supposed to connect the notebook display like Nvidia Advanced Optimus to the active GPU (dGPU or iGPU) automatically and without a restart via the MUS switch, did not work correctly in the test. Even a complete reinstallation of the test driver and the change to 22.7.1 brought no improvement in this regard. In order to permanently connect the display to the dGPU, the very good BIOS had to be used, where there is a switch for the MUX switch. Whether only the test sample was affected, or whether Corsair would have to do it again together with AMD remained open.

In the “Extreme” profile, AMD SmartShift Max, which distributes the maximum available power consumption in real time to the CPU and GPU depending on the load, presented itself without any problems. In the Balanced and Quiet profiles, however, there were still strong problems in this case. Corsair and AMD need to do it again.

Definitely Corsair's homework is the webcam, the video quality of which doesn't live up to a “1080p30” experience.

All in all, the Corsair Voyager a1600 presents itself as a very interesting first work with its own character in many respects, but the technologies developed together with AMD did not yet run smoothly in the test. In this regard and in terms of the webcam, it is to be hoped that solutions will soon be available in the 1st generation. The cooling system should in turn be an issue for a 2nd generation. In the 1st generation, the Corsair One also had to struggle with the cooling in particular, but it is now one of its strengths.

Anyone who is already interested in the 1st generation of the notebook should have this shortcoming on the list and wait and see whether the software problems experienced in the editorial team's test will be corrected, or in the end it was just the sample. Because at prices above 3,000 euros, such teething problems shouldn't disrupt everyday life, especially since the functions, if they work correctly, provide real added value.
