As the free developer community UBports has now announced, the open source operating system Ubuntu Touch, which was originally created by the British Linux distributor Canonical and has been adapted for smartphones and tablets, is now also officially released for the modular and fairly manufactured Fairphone 4.

Ubuntu Touch available via UBports Installer

Ubuntu Touch OTA-23, which is still based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (“Xenial Xerus”), which has become somewhat outdated in the meantime, can be installed on the Fairphone 4 with the latest UBports installer available on the project page on the GitHub developer platform. This makes the smartphone from the Dutch manufacturer of the same name, released in October 2021, the first device with Android 11 that officially supports the installation of Ubuntu Touch.

The Fairphone 2 and the Fairphone too 3 previously supported the UBports open source operating system.

We are pleased to announce that an Ubuntu Touch port for the Fairphone 4 is now available on the UBports installer.

We are very excited about this latest port, not only is the Fairphone 4 a great phone but this is the first Android 11 based port for Ubuntu Touch.

To find out what all the fuss is about downloading the latest version of the installer and see for yourself.

The Fairphone 2, 3 and 4 also make it possible to install other alternative mobile operating systems such as /e/OS, postmarketOS, CalyxOS or LineageOS, which are designed for data protection and anonymity.

Ubuntu Touch and 5G are still fighting

As the developers have also announced in the official UBports forum, there are still problems the use of the 5G mobile communications standard under Ubuntu Touch, which is therefore currently not available and will be submitted later.

The Fairphone 4 is one of the few smartphones with alternative operating systems based on the mainline Linux kernels as well as Halium, an abstraction layer for GNU/Linux on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
